Re: AI model running on i686 PC w/ Win 98

in Milliways
This isn't the first time the AI hype train has come for vintage computing. That said, I'm not too surprised that an LLM can run on an older PC. Most computer science concepts were worked out in the 1960s; from there, it was a matter of waiting for hardware to catch up.

Re: Windows 7 Risk

That being said, please make sure your host PC has an SSE 4.2 capable CPU, so it's sufficiently advanced. It's not a strict requirement, but OSes like Windows 8.1/10/11 won't run on ancient PCs anymore. Not in x64 editions, at least, I think. The 64-bit versions of Windows 8.1, 10, and 11 up to …

Re: My desktop

Let's talk about the future of free software vs. AI. I know from a decade of experience that releasing free software is rarely particularly rewarding as far as community engagement goes, and I've seen it for other developers as well. Unfortunately I think an AI audience has more to offer on this …

Re: Still using XP and dont want to change

dr_st wrote on 2024-12-13, 08:54: XP is not even fun. XP is for running old games (and maybe some specific apps) that don't run well on modern systems. Not that Windows 10 is any more fun when it starts to chug for seemingly no reason.

Re: Win98 efficiency hardware

in Windows
I keep seeing videos of win98 on modern machines and was wondering how well games work around that period. That depends on which graphics driver is installed. The default VGA driver won't cut it; VBEMP provides higher resolutions and bit depths, but still doesn't perform well enough for games. …

Re: My 3DMark01 Mega Thread

I think getting more than 1/3 the score of a Geforce 2 Ultra with a TNT2 M64 on a similar CPU is very respectable. The GF2 Ultra is easily 5-6 times as fast as a TNT2 M64. Yeah, that makes sense to me. That said... coupling a system like that with Windows XP is probably torture. Funnily enough, it …

Re: OpenBSD. Am I using it wrong?

What kind of host are you using for qemu? (Which OS, hardware?) I'm trying to use OpenBSD as the host on three PCs: a Core 2 Quad desktop, a Core 2 Duo laptop and a Pentium 4 desktop. Specs for the latter two systems are in my signature. Also, it's generally not a good idea to launch qemu as root, …

OpenBSD. Am I using it wrong?

in Milliways
After a disappointing experience with Linux on my K6-2 build, I thought I'd give OpenBSD a shot. I heard it had solid support for older hardware; I had also tried it a few times in the past, both on real hardware and in VMs, and concluded it was fine. Sure enough, I installed it, then got X11 and …
