Re: AGP video card benchmarks from ixbt.com

FX 5800/FX 5800 Ultra have abysmally low scores in Doom 3, so I've marked them in red. That's probably an error. Confirmed. Initially, I thought Doom 3 "working as intended" and the NV30 just can't handle the ARB2 path well (2.0 shaders etc). However, when I changed the default settings (marked as …

Re: WinXP - swap file on SSD?

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. I did a small test: tried to do something in Windows while running MemTest with "use all unused ram" setting. With page file on HDD (system drive) it was 100% unusable. With page file on a separate SSD (TLC drive formatted to use SLC cache as much as …

Re: Geforce FX 5600 Ultra vs FX 5700?

Yes. They are similar in performance (FX 5600 Ultra slightly faster in higher resolutions thanks to higher memory bandwidth, FX 5700 slighly faster in lower resolutions thanks to third vertex shader unit). But FX5600 Ultra is rarer and cooler (high quality PCB and good BGA RAM), so imho the Ultra is …

Re: WinXP - swap file on SSD?

Yea, but SSD as main disk isn't retro enough ;-) I can live with HDD bad access time on Win98 and XP but that memory swapping with Firefox and some games is awful. Also, I tried SSD with Promise SATA controller and it wasn't so much better than HDD on my build (on Vista /7 it was day and night …

WinXP - swap file on SSD?

Hello. My retro build has 1GB of RAM and the virtual memory is in use quite often. It is an i850/RDRAM config so I can't simply upgrade RAM. Do you think putting SSD for a swap file will improve performance noticeably ? If so, how to connect it for optimal speed (with adapter of course)? i850 only …

Re: The story of the QuForce FX 5800 Ultra...

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to tweak this duct to better fit the outlet on the bracket. My FX can't do 500/1000 MHz even at 1.5V, I would probably have to solder the missing caps and make a GDDR2 vmod. So currently the card is modded to FX5800 non-ultra (400/800) and the highest …

Re: The story of the QuForce FX 5800 Ultra...

Yes, it's very LOUD :D (but only in 3D, just like original FlowFX - first semi-passive GPU cooling system ;)). That's original FX1000 heatsink (it was glued so I decided to leave it), a blower and 3D-printed airduct. Temps are ok - ~55C at 1,4V in stress. Credits to Gainward for inspiration :) …
