Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy DVD on XP

in Windows
OK, so I reinstalled ac3filter and rebooted. Between those 2 actions, I can now play the movies fine again through media player. But I still get the same error when trying to run the game. I assume that mpeg2dec is an mpeg2 decoder but I never heard of it. Where can I get it? Is it just a dll? If so …

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy DVD on XP

OK, definitely making progress. Now either executable will run. The problem is, I'm getting a popup saying "Some of the streams in this movie are in an unsupported format." and then another popup from DXMCI saying "Error loading video". I tried to play the movies in Media player directly (which …

OK, so what am I doing wrong? When I use this dll with the hacked executables provided above, I get "The procedure entry point dimeKillEvent could not be located in the dynamic link library DXMCI.dll." And this DLL is much smaller than the previous one. ???

Your mistake was in thinking that the game was halfway decent. I think you will get much more enjoyment out of using it as a coffee coaster.

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy DVD on XP

It looks like it's using ffdshow to play the movies, that's why it keeps minimizing I think, because ffdshow keeps installing itself in the systray...gonna see if I can do anything about that. EDIT: That's not true, I uninstalled ffdshow and a lot of the other codecs I've picked up over the years. …

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy DVD on XP

Even with correct player I don't think it'll work. Seems like not all MCI is backwards compatible with win9x... Here's the first test version :happyhappy:. Attached is a debug build of dxmci and modified executables to load it. The game starts at my place and tries to open the movies through …

I was just thinking and doing some more research...maybe the 1.17 patch is designed to let the game use a software DVD decoder rather than a hardware one. Similar to the patches for Tex Murphy Overseer, which enabled the game to be played via the Mediamatics DVDExpress software. Does anyone have the …

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy DVD on XP

By looking at the exe with a hexeditor...these files import mciSendCommandA function from winmm.dll, my CD version does not. I assume this is used for DVD playback (the same as wc4 dvd). MP.EXE was in the 1.17 patch and that one used different MCI functions...I'll ignore that then. I'll try to do a …

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy DVD on XP

in Windows
yeah, it does not start with 1.17. Could you attach one of your exe files then. Does your version also have mp.exe? yeah I know about the KB article, Vulcan Fury wasn't released at all :). But they couldn't just totally guess...or could they :P. Anyway, the 1.17 patch definitely uses MCI... …

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy DVD on XP

The dxmci patch would most certainly have to be customized for the SFA, it cannot work the way it is now. But I don't have the game (only CD version) so I can't say how hard it is (or if it's even possible) to make it work. Microsoft Knowledge Base has SFA on the list... yeah..I forgot to change …

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy DVD on XP

I got the executables from the 1.17 DVD patch...I'll see if the game starts with my data files from the CD version and how it openes the movies. FYI, I think that patch is only for some particular brand of DVD drive. When I tried to install that patch, the game wouldn't run at all - I only got a …
