Re: What's bottlenecking?

The Pentium 4 3.06ghz/512/533 478 arrived today. Unfortunately I'm getting no picture after installing it. EDIT1: Trying CMOS clear EDIT2: Still not working EDIT3: It seems I made a rookie mistake. I didn't pull the lever before inserting the processor. I took it out, looked that it seemed fine and …

Re: Windows 98 startup monitor settings

Oh, I'm sorry. You use a CRT! Then forget about my post ;) I've assumed you were using a LCD. Earlier graphics cards often came with a tool to calibrate display and monitor settings. I don't know whether ATI has a tool for that kind of modern graphics card at all... Perhaps your windows driver may …

Re: Windows 98SE + Patchmem - Age of Empires 1

I have a Windows 98 SE build with 2 GB RAM using Patchmem. I'm not totally sure if it's connected to it but I just installed good old Age of Empires. When I try to open the game I get a Windows message: Error - "Not enough memory or swap file space. Close other applications and/or free some disk …

Re: What's bottlenecking?

I don't know how different the beta is, but Mount&Blade in general can be very CPU intensive. I heard the game was written in Python. It runs nice and smooth if you're just walking around the tavern or something but when you get into a battle and a bunch of AI people are going nuts the game is …

Re: What's bottlenecking?

So far I've managed to get the Windows 98/xp dual boot working. The 2 GB of RAM arrived and with Patchmem, that was recommended here, I've also got them to work. However, for some reason, at least the game for which I got the dual boot, Mount&Blade 0.808 works much better on Windows 98 than XP. It …

Re: What's bottlenecking?

Nope, the boot disk CD isn't working. I burned the iso on a CD-R, put it in the CD drive, booted up, the boot up hangs on to a black screen with the hyphen or underline flashing but nothing happens. Why would you burn a floppy disk image to a CD? Notice how it says "Boot Disk (3.5-1.44mb)". Disk vs …

Re: What's bottlenecking?

Thanks again! So, it seems I have to get floppy disks if I want to update the BIOS and the microcode with Windows 98. I also found this in the manual: "A BIOS update can also be carried out directly under Windows with the DeskFlash utility. DeskFlash is located on the "Drivers & Utilities" CD (from …

Any DDR1 memory stick that is 1GB or less (and NOT server like ECC/Registered). CPU FSB must be 533MHz or less, and your board probably doesn't support Hyper Threading (at least by deafult). Try to update BIOS and microcode if you can before getting new CPU : https://support.ts.fujitsu.com/ …

Re: What's bottlenecking?

Basicly : ucode is the thing that needed updating after Spectre/Meltdown come into light (to "fix" them). It "translates" some instructions from procesor, so that MB knows what to do with data that come from it (very basic understanding, not accurate, but I think good enough for simplicity sake). …

Re: What's bottlenecking?

1) Get a Pentium 4 (not sure what platform you have 478/775), 2) When dual booting, get 2GB RAM (install mempatch on 98 before using). Thanks. I guess I have 478. Not sure though. My mainboard is D1520 from Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo L (Year 2002 or 2003 I think). https://www.manualslib.com/manual/ …

Re: Windows 98 startup monitor settings

I guess that's a monitor setting then. Try to press the "Break"/"Pause" key (right of the F12 key) during the logo is active, and play with the settings in your monitor's OSD (on screen display) menu. Try to find something like aspect ratio, zoom, 16:9, ... There may be a difference whether you use …

Re: Windows 98 startup monitor settings

What exactly do you mean? The Windows desktop? Or the Starting Windows 98 Logo during Windows startup? The starting Windows 98 Logo (and also BIOS and everything at the boot up). After the startup everything works fine (already at the desktop) and is in 1024x768 resolution, 85 Hz refresh rate. And …
