For the 4-color issue, all I can think of are custom 8x8 textmode chars for 33%/66% dithered/filled in all possible 2x2 combinations per char for every 2x2 pixels of a GB buffer all on an extended text mode That might work, but I am hoping to avoid dithering to have a more authentic look.
