Re: Problematic Windows games list

in Windows
The flaws of someone else's wiki are not within my purview. My biggest problem with Shogo is that at least 90% of the time it won't even launch. I uninstalled it again after testing the new "patch" and only getting the game to actually launch twice. I probably should have made a video for the …

Someone released a bundle of Shogo fixes: https://www.moddb.com/games/shogo-mobile-armor-division/downloads/shogo-fix/#7541889 Unfortunately there I still have serious issues with the game: Game still fails to launch 90% of the time on my laptop. Upper-left text is almost unreadable. I can see a …

I've been burned out on wikis, although I'd probably still edit the VOGONS one if it wasn't effectively dead. Every wiki of any size eventually gets taken over by gatekeepers who revert every edit from people who are not in some blessed inner circle. Anyway, checked PCGamingWiki for the first few …

Re: Problematic Windows games list

IMO a game that has several solutions isn't problematic. Perhaps, but for the purposes of this list it would be nice to list some of these solutions. This list should not merely list games with issues on modern Windows. A list with solutions included becomes a useful reference. Exactly. The goal is …

Seems to work fine with DXWrapper's Dd7to9 and DxWnd. DXGL sort of works (have to alt-tab to view movies). DxWnd doesn't work with full-screen in my experience. You're not supposed to use it in fullscreen. Set it to scale the window to desktop and check "Keep aspect ratio" and "Hide desktop …

Someone developed a pretty solid solution for AMBER: Journeys Beyond some time ago. I was going to mention Simcity 2000 Network Edition, but I recall someone also solved that as well. Would be good to get some details/links on the workarounds for these. Sanitarium is on Steam, but maybe it's a new …

Gruntz. The game gets to main menu and to level selection well. But in-game, it's painfully slow. It's about 7 seconds per frame. I've tried a lot of DirectDraw wrappers and i only got great results with dgVoodoo. VM using Windows XP is also a solution. Seems to work fine with DXWrapper's Dd7to9 …

Running everything bare on Windows 10 isn't what OP asked for, but listing problem games and workarounds to run them from windows 10, which includes virtual machines. VMs are OK to suggest as a workaround if the game has been tested with them and there are no major performance/compatibility/etc. …

Re: AGP Card for MVP3 motherboard (FIC PA-2013)

This reminds me that there was a common hack for my early Gigabyte GA-6BXC (Intel 440BX Pentium II/III) board where people would bypass the AGP voltage regulator with a wire from the ATX pins in order to power newer GPUs. I used to have this hack in place on mine, but removed it at some point for …

That would be boring, though, because it would just look like EGA. I did a mock-up of what I'm talking about: Filename firehawk-vga-simulated.png File size 19.52 KiB Views 306 views EGA for comparison: Filename firehawk-ega.gif File size 22.58 KiB Views 306 views MCGA for comparison: Filename …

Re: VGA games with only 16 colors

I don't know of any lists. Maybe we should start one. Sierra's PC ports of Japanese games are weird ones that might be relevant: It always bothered me that Firehawk's MCGA/VGA driver uses only 16 colors at 320x200, while the EGA driver runs 16 colors at 640x350 and uses a sort of dithering to …

Re: Lithtech game performance

Somehow, I have doubt in Titus fixing their thrown-up-on-Steam version... I'm taking thrown-up as a double entendre. What's more surprising is that I bought it on GOG and it still doesn't work on my modern computer. GOG usually puts a little more effort into things, but they were probably selling …

Re: Lithtech game performance

Shogo basically won't run for me on Windows 10. Could be due to the dual Intel + nVidia GPU setup in my laptop, or something else. I tried all the suggestions - wrappers, etc. Best I could do was run in some wacky mode where everything was stretched badly, which made for a terrible experience. It …

Re: AGP Card for MVP3 motherboard

My brother had a K6-2/380 in a Via (Apollo MVP3?) motherboard with an AGP Banshee, and it did okay. My PII-450 with AGP TNT1 performed better though. Also, it was necessary to install Via AGP drivers in Win98 to get the best performance and stability.

Re: Problematic games list

This is listed everywhere as a DOS game. Have you tried using DOSBox? No, I tried using different Dos machines. This thread is about old Windows games that don't run well or at all on modern Windows machines. DOSBox or other emulators/simulators/VMs provide feasible solutions for running most DOS …
