Thanks for the tip. Actually the problem was that the search function by default in the hex editor was set to case sensitive and I was searching for lower case. There's only one instance of "COM2" in capital letters. So I changed THAT 2 to 00 in hex and it worked, but now I have the graphics problem …

Okay, so I editted 4D.exe. But I still got the same error. In 4D.exe, there are 3 occurences of com2. com2 in hex is 63 6F 6D 32. So am I supposed to change the hex code to 63 6F 6D 00?

I changed the directory from read only to all access. That didn't help. I tried running the program from other directories and ran into the same problem. No luck with that but thanks for the advice. The computer I am running on is a laptop with no serial or parallel ports. I'm not sure that the problem has anything to do with a com port.
