Re: List of ACT 4.1 fixes?

in Windows
I stumbled upon this page , which indeed suggests that all these compatibility fixes get installed automatically with new Windows updates. I wonder what was up with Extreme-G 2 then? I guess installing ACT and manually messing with the extra compatibility options really should be a last-ditch effort …

Re: Use of multiconfiguration under Win98

in DOS
Say, if you install Windows 98 on a FAT16 partition , is it possible to install MS-DOS 6.22 and add it to the Win98 boot menu without having to reinstall Windows 98? I've wanted to do that a few times. Also, is it true that MS-DOS 6.22 can't boot from a primary partition beyond the first 8 GB? I've …

Re: List of ACT 4.1 fixes?

in Windows
Well, there's one specific example that I know of: apparently Extreme-G 2 will not work with XP SP2 but requires you to download and run it with ACT. Surely it is not unique in this respect? Doesn't ACT 4.1 contain a more up-to-date database than the one installed in XP SP2?

List of ACT 4.1 fixes?

in Windows
I often find myself suggesting to people that they take a look at Microsoft's Application Compatibility Toolkit to get unusually stubborn Windows games running. (The easiest way to download it and all the necessary components is to go to http://www.mdgx.com/xptoy.htm , where the necessary links can …

Re: How (in)compatible MS-DOS 7 is?

in DOS
I have read at least one account that states that DOS 7.x really is just DOS 6.22 with FAT32 support. This panicking about incompatibility seems unjustified. It is quite well known that some foreign-language versions of Windows 9x has a bug in HIMEM.SYS that caused it to take up unusual amounts of …

Re: GeForce 6800 SLI works on Windows 98?

in Windows
By the way, I also wonder: does Windows 98 need driver to run on a particular motherboard? I thought motherboard driver (or is it chipset driver?) is something that started from Windows XP. Nope. There's a Windows 98 "Chipset ID utility" for Win9x available on Intel's website, and I've seen similar …

Re: Help with building retro PC

DOS can access file on DVD but you nead good driver: Don't use mscdex, it can't open files/directories with lowercases in their name Use shsucdx (it's free) or nwcdex (it come with dr-dos) In config.sys, I use dvs.sys (I don't remember where I downloaded it) I know Win9x cannot read multisession …

Re: VDMS for Windows? Jack Orlando

Well, you've heard of WINE, right? Not perfectly compatible just yet, but quite impressive nonetheless. Alas, there's no such thing as WINE for Windows right now, but you can always run some flavor of Linux in VMware or Virtual PC (both of which are now available for free) and run WINE that way. …
