Strictly speaking it is not possible ... the default file transfer mode is set by the server, not the client. If you are getting all FFs for the MAC address then the packet driver is not using the correct I/O port address for the card. Check for port conflicts and make sure that the port address is set correctly when loading the packet driver.

Not to be overly pedantic here, but you called it a side-effect. In the case of the PCjr it was explicitly taken advantage of; that is not a side-effect. That makes it a design feature.
