Re: UMB support?

You do have the option of installing and booting real versions of MS-DOS (or clones) inside of DOSBox if you want to do that kind of stuff though. Do any games work using MS-DOS that don't using Dosbox's DOS? I can't think of any.

Re: dag nabbit!! insight anyone? PoR won't transfer

Ok i just finished Pool of Rad on this dosbox thingy and I am attempting to bring the same characters to curse of azure bonds but no worky worky I believe there is a utility called Copycurs.exe that aids in transfering characters from Pool to Curse. You should wait for the CD for an official copy. …

Re: Tandy Sound and the Game Blaster

So, for a Sound Blaster 1.0, which had always had Game Blaster chips, how would you be able to send the data to the right chip? If both chips used port 220H, it would not work properly. Both the CMS and OPL chips would output sound and it would sound terrible. How do you disable the one but not the …

Re: Tandy Sound and the Game Blaster

QBiN: Thanks for the suggestion. Does it matter whether I use the old 16-color EGA version or the newer 256-color remake? I think I have both versions, but I'll have to check. No, you can hear Game Blaster music on either the 16 or 256 color disk version. Interestingly, you cannot hear Roland MT-32 …

Re: Roland CM-32L emulator

In Ultima Underworld, if you use the MT-32 you will not hear the sound of water running when you enter the water. With the CM-32L you will hear it. I also think the door opening and closing sound may be different and you may also hear a clink sound if your sword strikes a wall with a CM-32L. Other …

ROM and RAM

A MT-32 has 512KB of PCM ROM and 64KB of Control ROM. It also has 64KB of RAM for up to 128 user-created custom sound patches. This means that the data to create a custom patch would be 512 bytes per patch, unless the RAM is used for something other than patches. Where is the information for the …

Re: Roland CM-32L emulator

Do Ultima Underworlds I and II use the CM-32L/LAPC-I sound effects? Interestingly, the first game supports the Sound Blaster/Pro for digitzed voices only, not sound effects. Sound effects are strictly FM Synth based regardless of whether you select the Adlib, Sound Blaster or Sound Blaster Pro. (The …

Re: The Roland CM-500 GS/LA Sound Module

Actually, I can solve the problem by finding someone to trade the CM-500 module for a Roland CM-32L and a SC-55mkII/55ST or something similar. Interestingly, the Roland GS sound set is licensed by Microsoft from Roland in DirectX. The sounds are contained within a DLS file, but I only have an SB …

Re: The Roland CM-500 GS/LA Sound Module

All Roland modules seem to use two 1/4" mono phono jacks, so you will need an adapter and a splitter for the 1/8" stereo phono jacks that PC speakers use. Your issue with the earlier Sierra games is not a fault of the CM-500, but rather the MT-32 driver used for these games. You will need to use one …

The Roland CM-500 GS/LA Sound Module

Now that I have had my Roland CM-500 sound module for a couple of weeks, I would like to share my observations not only about the unit but also about true Roland synth. The CM-500 is something approaching a DOS Gamer's wet dream. DosBox can emulate just about every major sound standard out there, PC …

Re: Tandy Sound and the Game Blaster

The problem is that most games that supported the Game Blaster also supported the earlier, superior and more widespread Adlib card. Guess which card developers tuned their games for. I would guess that few games that supported both have particularly impressive sounding Game Blaster tunes. You may …

Tandy Sound and the Game Blaster

The Game Blaster's sound chip has been described as four IBM PCjr./Tandy 1000 sound chips. This statement is inaccurate in two respects. First, the Creative Music System/Game Blaster uses two identical sound generator chips, relabeled Phillips SAA 1099s. One chip is used in the MGT Sam Coupe. The …

Re: Akalabeth (Ultima 0) Crash

They could have used MS Quick Basic; I have seen a port of Akalabeth run very well with that (although it didn't support sound effects for some reason.) I like the fact that Origin's Akalabeth port color codes the dungeon levels and the text, and the Adlib music is okay, but unnecessary and …

Re: Looking for Optimization advice

Considering that you almost have probably the fastest processor that is widely available, plenty of RAM and good enough graphics and sound cards there isn't much you can do with the game to speed it up at this time, unless DOS32/A can help you out. I do believe that the FX models have unlocked …
