I had two quite good Iyama Vision Masters, 17" and 19", and 60hz killed my eyeballs quick enough - not like staring into a strobe light with a cheap CRT, but much below 85hz and I'd get eyestrain soon enough. Eyes differ - Fluorescent lighting annoys me for the same reason. 85hz was the sweet spot …

For me legacy hardware is attractive because: 1. Retro rigs nicely complement a game collection that spans more than one or two OS/hardware cycles. 2. 3dfx/Glide and Rendition accelleration. 2. hmmm.. I've lost two mid-90s hard drives since spring [WD 2.1 and 10] as well as an ASUS P3B-F, which I promply replaced. I back up all retro rigs on an external USB drive, though it's not always 100% current. Same for the main XP rig - on a 1.5tb usb3 drive.

Wow I just did a search on the Quantum3D since I wasn't very familiar. Found this site which rounds them up: http://www.thedodgegarage.com/3dfx/q3d_mercury_brick.htm I had never heard of the "brick" before - 8 chipsets on a 4 card SLI - what a beast!

hmmm... I ran an ATI 9700 Pro in the 2001-04 time period and had a terrific experience. I updated the drivers regularly and don't recall many or sever compatibility/performance issues. The card was more stable than the 2x EVGA 7800GT SLI I followed it up with - new drivers always broke a few games …

The only thing I really miss about CRTs is color rendition. I had 2 Iiyama VisionMasters [17" and 19"] and their colors have never be surpassed. Side-by side comparisons of the gold dome in Riven glinting in the sunlight showed how much richness is lost with lower end CRTs and LCDs gernerally. But …

XP is pretty hopeless when it comes to multi-core and multi-threaded CPUs. It's ancient. XP is still pretty solid - for gaming.
