The oldest version of FRAPS I can find is 1.9d, and it doesn't seem to run under W95. Is there an earlier version that does, or another app that will work? Also I doesn't appear that Fraps works in Glide - is this true?

After looking at my own "numbers" I'm up-gunning the cpu on my Legacy-1 box from a P200mmx to 233. W95osr2+/intel AN430TX/Stealth S220-4mb [Rendition]/2x Voodoo2-12mb SLI/Vibra16S [XR385 daughterboard on order]/64mbPC100/Thrustmaster ACM gamecard.

@mole totally right about scaling and the logevity of XP - I still run XP for example. But in retro terms though, we have a choice - what systems to build, what cards/boards/cpus to focus on - it's not so much about running a particular game to the max. Deus Ex? HalfLife 1? Yes back in the day maxed out gaming system seemed less common. Games vs hardware in constant flux and tension. It seemed that hardware was was coming out every few months that raised the bar and games took advantage of every extra ounce - the improvements in gaming over very short periods of time …

Ideally you want a cpu/gpu pairing that doesn't waste the potential of either part. This is especially important when budget is a constraint since it makes no sense to overspend on one part only to have it bottlenecked by the other. Balance is also a virtue from more theoretical or aestetic …

I agree the S3 Virge solution for 2D work is best and the Stealth 3D-2000 pro was a very good performer in this regard. No hassle with the old games, *just works*, freeing precious time to figure out how the hey to get those early 3dfx game running smoothly on your cool Voodoo 1...

If you got sims lying around try Longbow 2, Total Air War, European Air War, and give Grand Prix Legends a shot.. These all appeared in the V1/2 transition but were very demanding even on pentium systems. Would be interesting to see how they fly on a 486..

Got it... well, it's done. DL'd FV v46, uninstalled all previous drivers and inf's, and installed the new drivers via DevMgr and it's all go. Nice! So far tested Hind and Apache Longbow [both 3dfx v2 patched] and they run nice and smooth though still exhibit the exit game bug where you need to close …
