🤣@ 1995-96 games mentioned 😀 Barring the special budget games, the last major big budget ones I know of are fall 1998's Jetfighter Full Burn and Elder Scrolls Redguard. Bethesda clung onto DOS for a while, they also had Burnout Championship Drag Racing for dos that same year

wallpapers aren't going to bring back your visible borders, buttons with depth, non-Segoe fonts and color schemes. Win9x wasn't defined by a 'wow retro aesthetic wallpaper' alone.

3dmark and other synthetic benchmarks are useless. Only games should be used for testing, and must have both SW and HW options. Unless those games get screwed by driver regressions like CVAs not being detected in Quake3 leading to nVidia's big lead over Radeons Mostly irrelevant with OpenGL API. …

don't forget to avoid later nvidia forcewares in the 6x.xx range. on win9x they're broken enough to give false "defective" impressions

You can see the software fallback on the Kyro II kept up with the GeForce 2 without any sort of exotic CPU. I'm certain Aquanox was more fillrate hungry than pushing vectors. PowerVR avoids overdraw and will only show a performance edge in poorly optimized games that are a little full of themselves …

The "3.1 / 6.22 drivers" throws a wrench into this. They were dead long before AGP.

Yeah that's about right. my v2 shot apparently was picmip 1 oops (though voodoos had been caught messing with the range before)

ACM's an audio codec Interplay had used throughout since around Starfleet Academy and FallOut, and that was also involved with their second-party devs

Unreal can't do anything for 8-bit color, that'd likely induce more initialization errors. Unreal's support for 8bpp was stripped out of SoftDrv in 1997
