The initial May 1998 release has had some CPU-related crashes that were rectified in the immediate patches after (mainly Cyrix users at the time) Also, Unreal versions prior to v222 are known to crash on Voodoo3.

There's many Linux live cds out there that at least recognize a bunch of hardware from device IDs (but not necessarily have the proper drivers for them)

IQ is very subjective here when a lot of those special S3 textures are obvious photoshop filter jobs. Plus, S3's novelty was only exclusive for like a year anyway when S3TC started appearing on other cards soon after and cwdonhal's UT GL renderer would come to support them.

My similar system has TWO Windows ME installs and a Win98SE install. They both held up better than 98SE. My DOS compatibility is broken anyway with the SBPCI128's legacy drivers conflicting with the PCX2.

Try to play SimCity 2000 Windows in 16-bit color, and your road's cars will stop and your city will animate less. This isn't just Windows either. MacOS's also got a few of these (and can be way more fussy about it, but at least you can switch depth on demand without restarting).

Smug "just use glide" demands notwithstanding, It should work, though this may depend on your Unreal version as the Direct3D renderer had evolved much between patch updates. There's a "Use3dfx" preference switch in there which may/may not help (probably intended for V2).
