The playable Golden Axe DOS experience I remember was on a 386SX16 (VGA and SB). A lot of old arcade ports face that ISA bottleneck so it'll never be perfect, and VGA panning wasn't a thing many bothered with.

Voodoo2 ain't got the texture memory for Quake3 without it hitching nor the support for 32-bit textures so it'll look very banded and posterized in places. A "legendary" second V2 in SLI can't do anything about that (in fact the hitching will be worse as there's two cards to get starved with). That …

Quake II had CD audio and doesn't require the CD in since patch 3.20. Some UnrealEngine1 games (that aren't Unreal Tournament <436) can be jimmied into seeking the CD path to .\ to defeat the 'protection' in the .ini. There's also some other releases of CD games that leave the protection out …

HL2's not much of a big change. They just went from having everything in a few .GCFs then reinvented the pak file for post-Orange releases and have a few more loose bits. A lot of the changing's to deal with the engine hitching to cache better IIRC, as Source then was known to hitch and stutter.

I play PSO2 and that's 209,444 files, and the bulk of that are little compressed packs with more files in them so there could've been much more.

The Incredible Machine and Sid & Al's Incredible Toons display in a slight letterbox and aren't full 640x480 nor 4:3 (and should never be 'corrected' to 4:3) The Lemmings frontend should also be similar (ingame however is intended 4:3)

a faster cpu won't ever compensate the increased thrash of a sli pair. At that point you're better off bumping up to a proper video card.
