Most of those don't fit... HL2 definitely doesn't. You can't just associate any 'future' game with this particular aesthetic. Neocron is an MMO that is heavily into this aesthetic. It was developeod for years when that was big and it stuck to its design. Does The Fifth Element game count? 😀

Required Flash and HTML5 is the common stopper for Win9X browsing anyhow. So is Java Runtime, but that however has become increasingly irrelevant these days (thank god!!!). If Flash's refusal for older OS doesn't stop you, the insane CPU usage for video playback will. 🙁

320x240 is doublescanned so to your monitor it's no different than 640x480. Low resolution support is usually dropped by more recent video drivers than the OS itself. I've had a verying lack of 320x240 on XP before with several different cards...

Remember, the obscure ones are the tricky freeware/shareware and they do exist, there's more to DOS games than just the laundry list of 'popular' games on 'abandonware' sites. There is a lot out there, some I know that exist that I can't even find for decades!

Generally these refined game engines have GDI and Waveout fallbacks for lack fo DirectX, Quake included though in quake's case there's a hard version check against anything under version 4. Is there anything like KernelEx or Compatibiltiy mode to fake that for 3.51?
