Also on this Promise CK99 card there are no jumpers, apart from one which has LED on it so I assume that is the HDD LED. I am still looking for a manual or something on this card.

What other boot options do you have? A: C: CD-ROM maybe? AFAIK these addon controllers had their own BIOS. Are there any jumpers on the card? Do you have a manual for that card? Well I have the Promise card in with HDD in IDE1 and CD ROM in IDE2. I disabled the OnBoard local BUS but couldn't find any option to boot from SCSI. When turned on the promise card says "detecting" but never detects anything. The computer just stays there and doesn't go any further.

Well I didn't see anything in the manual, but I am not sure if I have the whole manual. It was the one posted on here somewhere. I just looked in the BIOS and there is a setting that says "Onboard Local BUS IDE" and there is a setting that disables it. I guess that's it!

I just got myself a Promise IDE card. Do I need to change a jumper or something on my ASUS PVI-486SP3 motherboard to disable the on-board controller or is there something in BIOS?

Well, if anyone can recommend an IDE controller board for this 486 motherboard I would really appreciate it (eBay links etc). I am going to combine that with a new HDD. So is it okay to use the size of drive (80GB) that I had before formatted to 8GB? If anybody already has an IDE controller board …

Same thing happened to me recently. I have the same board, but use a 8GB CF card. Before I got that, I used a 12GB harddisk, which never had any trouble. After much researching, I still have no idea what causes the corruption. It could be the onboard CMD640 IDE controller, which is known to be crap …

Well it can be the controller, the cable and the drive. I would swap the cable ASAP and also do a deep scan on the drive. I'd also look into getting a new controller card in case that doesn't help you... Controller Card? The IDE cable connects directly to the MB. I will check the other items though …

Try running the surface scan. I just did that and when it got to the directory structure bit it found errors in the file0000.chk files so I told it to fix it. Then it started doing the surface scan and didn't find anything. The message at the end was "38 directory entries FAT chains were truncated …
