I think it's easier to forget about FM midi if you want a PCI sound card, better off buying a PCI sound card for general midi and have an earlier system for FM synthesis. That's the conclusion Ive come too.

My geforce FX5500 is an Axel branded 128bit 256meg card. So maybe thats the difference its not a chinese one?

After testing my 486sx/16 with a GD5422, I found it to be particularly slow. Do you think that an accelerated cirrus chip like the GD5434 would be a better choice for such a machine? Possibly but thats a slow CPU For what its worth in my testing their is no performance disadvantage in any situation …

Yeah as cool as the POD83 is or even the Cyrix 5x86-120 the overclocked AMD really is the best compramise, faster than the Cyrix in Quake a bit slower vs POD83 but would do better for most games of the era. Kind of sucks I really liked the Cyrix chip but AMD @ 160mhz is better.

Yeah im not sure alot of 486 motherboards have PCI 2.1 but the modern cards dont work, could be a power issue not sure.

One thing about the Voodoo3 vs TNT2 debate was the fact their was no high end TNT2 card for the PCI bus, with 3DFX you had the 3000 PCI and if a PCI slot was all you had their was no other option, 3DFX was a no brainer.
