Re: Win7 32 bit

in Windows
Why bother with DOS software in Windows when you can use DOSbox? It emulates all common graphics cards, sound cards and ports old software expects. I think, this topic was about native 16 bit Windows software. And those should work with any 32 bit Windows.

Re: Win7 32 bit

I used Windows 7 on my old Athlon XP, and it did run 16 bit software. With 64 bit, Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate, there was XP mode, supporting 16 bit software. Not sure, if the downloads are still available, though, since the support ended with the extended support for XP. On the other hand, usually …

Re: Releasing Source Code =/= Higher Sales

in Milliways
its weird how when id software releases their source code to games, it didn't have a bigger sales impact as people were buying their games a second time? What has the source code to do with buying a game a second time? If anything, download platforms are a reason to buy a game a second time since …

Re: Games with Adlib as an option for sound effects

SCUMM V5 non-talkie has it. Actually, it handles music and sound effects the same. All sampled sound effects have an Adlib alternative, which is used when playing in Adlib mode. Games with Soundblaster support usually have Adlib only available for music. Older games without Soundblaster support …

Re: CD Dos games that uses midi as music?

in DOS
Secret of Monkey Island Only the floppy versions, which infact counts, as the vga version was available on countless magazine CDs and also on some compilation CDs. However, the enhanced CD has no midi music. Yet, it has the midi drivers intact, since it uses them for a few sound effects like the …

Re: Doom95 under Windows 10

in Windows
There are no less than 10 Doom source ports, why not just use one of them instead. I prefer GZDoom myself, but you could use Chocolate Doom for a purely vanilla play. Exactly. Or if you want high resolution, but keep it close to vanilla, use PrBoom. That probably would be the closest to Doom95's …

Re: DOS command line support

in DOS
"dir /s" goes through all sub-directories recursively. It is not a tree view, but it lists every file with date and size. If you also need hidden and system files, add "/a". Also "help" is a very useful command. It even used to be hypertext, but it isn't anymore.

Re: What are some DOS games I might have been playing wrong?

Well, the "Ultimate Doom" upgrade dared introducing an episode with a gothic theme a 100% foreign to the trilogy that preceded it, yet without a story of it's own. It didn't make the original episodes worse, though. You could always just skip the new episode, if you don't like it. There is one …

In some cases, even the Amiga graphics were downgraded for DOS. And the aspect ratio was usually wrong. I don't know what was the usual Amiga resolution/aspect ratio, but many games were ported to 320x200, which is 16:10, but almost all CRT monitors back then were 4:3. Most Amiga games were 320x200 …

Re: What are some DOS games I might have been playing wrong?

in DOS
Most games ported from other systems suffer more or less. C64 and Atari games are reduced to PC speaker. And later, Amiga games were reduced to Adlib music. In some cases, even the Amiga graphics were downgraded for DOS. One rare exception is Turrican II, which has a great DOS port. On Monkey Island …
