Since P4 (even prescott) is not that far away from Athlon XP (barton), why not (like myself) go for Abit KT7A (AGP + 5 PCI + 1 ISA) and plug in any good old ISA sound card. DOS works flawlessly 😉

Atom is fast enough to run DOSBox, so I'd personally go that route to avoid hardware headaches.
