Re: Final version

Canadcow, this is really a big leap forward for the MT-32 emulator. I just listened to Monkey Island 1, 2 and Ultima Underworld and they sound really like the old Roland (only I never listened to one). But perhaps you could check my old favourite, Wing Commander. There seem to be some volume issues, …

Re: Midi Music

in Milliways
Of course, I suffered also from the grass-is-greener...-syndrome. I got my first adlib-clone (the cheapest of the cheap) in 1992, while I had been playing computer games from 1988 on. I listened to the Monkey-Island-tunes on my PC speaker and was astonished when I found out one day that there is …

Midi Music

in Milliways
Well, I just read the following article http://www.hardware-one.com/reviews.asp?aid=194&page=2 and found this statement: FM synthesis was a really bad way to model real instruments and most of the time, the instruments sounded really tinny and hollow, not at all like the real thing. which forced me …

Re: CPU idle load in different Dosbox ver.

Did you make sure that the frameskip and cycle count was the same in all of those tests, and that you were monitoring DOSbox when it was in the same state (e.g. running a specific game or sitting at a DOS prompt) each time? Just curious. You got a point there, I used different cycle counts and have …

CPU idle load in different Dosbox ver.

While playing around with the different versions of Dosbox I noticed that the CPU load in idle mode varies considerably from version to version. While the 0.58 version with Roland support by canadcow uses in idle mode only 20%-25% the official 0.58 version uses 40%-50% and the current CVS (9/28) …

Re: Bigger, better, faster alpha version

For crying out loud, Alkarion...you wonder why things heat up and then you stir things up again. ...Sorry, I just couldn't resist. As runderwo and canadacow have already stated, this isn't the same kind of thing... Well, that depends on the level of detail with which you examine the issue. If you …

Re: Bigger, better, faster alpha version

First, I will justify this post by saying: Great, great that canadcow puts so much work into this project, which gives a gaming veteran (me, started in 1987 with Pacman) the chance to listen to his beloved old games (above all else Wing Commander). Second, I cannot withstand to comment on this: …

Re: Roland MT-32

Thanks, but now I fear there is nothing left to keep me from wasting 40$ for an old MT-32. (To connect it to my 486/66 which I built in the case of our very first computer, a 286 bought in 1987 for around 4000$ (!))

Roland MT-32

I don't know if it's really the right place to ask, but how does the good ol' MT-32 function? Do you have to own a special Roland ISA sound card to control the external MT-32 synthesizer or do just connect the external synthesizer to the midi interface of your soundblaster? Well, perhaps someone …

Dosbox and Windows driver

I'm a bit confused concerning the way the MT-32 emulation in Dosbox works. Do I still have to use the Windows MT-32 driver or is my standard MIDI-driver ok? I thought with the MT-32 emulation being implemented in Dosbox I don't have to alter the MIDI-device. But without the MT-32 Windows-driver it …
