If this board was manufactured by AMI, it would really surprise me, because all of the ones I've seen are clearly marked with the manufacturer's name, model name and series number.

Here it is. It seems to be the same BIOS from the Rev B board. Strangely it's dated 07/07/91. A 12/12/91 is available on Rev B.

I'm not talking about the EPROM where the video BIOS code is stored. ATI cards have a separate EEPROM chip for user settings. It's usually a little 8 pin thing. Did anyone other than ATi do this?

That may be the general case, but it doesn't apply to the ATi cards. I tested VGA Wonder 16 v3, various VGA Wonder+ cards and Graphics Ultra. They all had dual BIOS chips and worked fine in my 5160. Although it's been over 25 years, I am quite certain my friend had the same V4 OEM VGA Wonder card …

I'm pretty sure I tested a Hercules Dynamite Power (et400ow32p) in my Alaris board, and it worked. I was curious and I think I tested my entire pile of VLB cards, and they all worked. Though admittedly I did not test windows drivers.

Interesting. So the Bali32 and the 2Themax cards were both available with 110MHz RAMDACs? I didn't know that. Other than the different RAMDACs, have you noticed any other physical differences between your card and the Bali32? Have you tried using a Bali32 BIOS with Bali32 driver package?

There are only a handful of EISA chipsets for 486 class systems. Unless your board has one, then that slot is guaranteed to not be EISA (despite what the silkscreen claims).

In theory, the correct triangle to align with is the larger one on the outer edge of the PCB. However, when you're dealing with jerry rigged cheapskate parts made with scab labour, who really knows. To be safe you could consult the 5x86 pdf manual and use a multimeter to see which pins go where.

5 minutes seems awfully long to load Windows. It should be more like 5 seconds. I’ve seen this kind of hang when there are driver issues…usually related to network, but sometime the mouse.
