What I'd like is a nice boxed PODP5V133. Too bad they probably go for a few hundred buckazoids. Of course if I found one I'd probably open it 😁 Ah...that new (old) computer part smell.

Yeah, that wavefront card is interesting. It looks like a mediavision board to me, but possibly a prototype of some sort. Looks like it was also available with extra soundfont bank RAM and SCSI. The only two other cards of interest are the Intel NIC and the 8-bit Cirrus Logic EGA/VGA card.

I seem to recall the Pentium MMX chips were intel's first attempt at locking down the CPU to prevent overclocking.

If I were to cut the OPL3 from an original Microsoft Windows Sound System card, would the card still be usable? Would it then sit better with something like an SB Pro? If it worked, it seems like it could be a pretty nice combo.

I didn't mean to imply that a DX50 was a good idea, just that it was still cutting edge in 1992. A lot of common 486 boards did have problems with 50MHz, but surely the 50MHz EISA boards from Mylex, AMI, Micronics and Tyan were half decent.

Top for 92 would have been a VL/EISA motherboard with either DX/2-66 or DX-50. A big SCSI HDD, 16MB RAM. Graphics card would have been debatable. I'd probably say something like a Mach32 or S3 928 with at least 2MB VRAM. If you wanted to get really fancy you would have had something like a TIGA …

The 1542B may not be the best card for the job. I've never actually owned that particular model (I have 1542C, 1540C, 1542CP) but I have seen reports of compatibility issues with the 1542B cards. I guess some of the problems may have been fixed through BIOS updates. Those cards are too old to use …

Ah, interesting. It doesn't have VLB, so it's nearly the same as my DTK PKM 0031Y except that it has a 4167 socket instead of a P23T socket, and it's made by Asus. I didn't know Asus made any bords that used this chipset.

The TI chip you bought is exactly the same as the Cyrix part. For the most part any FPU will work with it as long as it is rated for the correct speed. I also seem to recall that early model Cyrix FPUs might cause problems with the DLC chips, so in general it's best to stick with late model FPUs …
