Most likely all the 30MHz 486 boards were used in OEM boxes, probably using proprietary form factors. I am almost certain Compaq was one of them. Remember AMD has a 90MHz 486 chip out there, 30MHz bus was the real deal. How long have you had a 120MHz/4x?

I started out on a DX-33. I finally upgraded it to a DX/2 around 1998 or so, and to be honest I wasn't exactly blown away. It's an improvement for sure, but not what I was expecting. If you want to play early 3D games you might as well get a Pentium.

It exists as a stand alone ISA card too. Used to upgrade model 20s and 30s equipped with MCGA. It was also used for a short time in 5170s sold in France in late 1987 (along with matching PS/2 VGA monitor)

You shouldn't pay much for the 5x86C chips. They aren't worth much in gold, and they were mass produced.

I seem to recall 1994 is when CD-ROM drives became must have items. You could still buy PCs without them in 1994, but if you look at the old magazines from 1994 you'd probably find that any respectable system without one.

It's a little messier than I imagined. I was kind of hoping it would be possible to build an adapter that stacked under the keyboard controller with a single cable feeding off IRQ12. Once I get all of my tools and parts back I'll have to look into this. It's interesting you had to desolder the KB …

Ah, I'm glad you've finally managed to get this going. I think it's going to open up a lot of possibilities for boards without PS/2 ports. I would like to try getting this working on older 486 and 386 boards as well. I believe it should be possible to do so without an award BIOS that has ps/2 enable …

It's not a bad combination, but it is missing 16-bit playback in Windows. That's the main reason I switched to the Yamaha.

Sierra games are picky even with real creative cards. I recall at least half the time I couldn't get SFX working on my SB 2.0 or SB16. I think patching the games takes care of most of these problems. I have been using YMF 719 with sierra games and find it works quite well.

ET6000 and Virge both had interfaces for VLB, but as far as I know no cards were ever produced. I heard a rumour about a virge card a while back, but I wasn't able to find any documentation to back it up. I suppose if such a thing exists it would be coming from a no name Taiwanese company.

I switched to OSX86. I occasionally run XP from VM or dual boot. Now that Steve Jobbies is dead I don't expect Apple to hold it together, so I am preparing for a possible move back to Linux. I will refuse to go back to a microshit product.

I think NJRoadfan sums up PC hardware of the first decade of the 2000s pretty nicely. It was so bad I wanted to cry. Things didn't really improve until the Core iX platform came out in my opinion. The Core2 CPUs were a huge improvement but the platforms were still really buggy.

Intel's version was probably only used by OEMs, but the AMD and Cyrix writeback models were fairly common.

Can you do some benchmarks with the DX/2 66 to see if the memory scores exhibit the same problems? What kind of DX/2 is it? A 5V model with WT cache would be preferable.
