One of big changes with the T-breds vs. T-birds is the reduction in the die size. Basicly the entire microchip being smaller means that less power is needed for it to operate, and therefore there is less power loss in the form of heat.

Don't you just love playing games with ATA interfaces? With all the quirks you find its one of the reason I like SCSI so much, at least there all you really have to worry about are Device ID's and termination.

I have changed a few PSU fans. Never had header to use a quick swap, but never had to solder either. Always just cut the wires and used butt connectors, heat shrink, and a crimper. My setup is very close to the system you used for the benchmarks, and my V5 AGP nailed out 227.6fps at the default setting and LFB enabled. Out of my small collection I topped out with NV6 at 238.0fps.

I would also add that with a KT133A/Mobile Barton based system you can change the speed rather easily. I can switch from 1.67ghz to 800mhz with a simple trip to the BIOS.
