Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are 3DFX cards any good for D3D? Even OpenGL? I had the impression that they lived in a weird Glide only world and therefore were only good for games of that vintage that offered support. I don't care about Glide.

Seems like a verifiably bad idea. The smart people have pointed out how this frequently makes your devices worse off and weaker. That heat+irradiation is killer. I have a monitor whose frame is case is cracking apart spontaneously. It has not been treated ever.
