the "Microsoft\DirectDraw\MostRecentApplication" registry key is not updated consistently... this causes a silent fail? keep trying until the Name under the MostRecentApplication key matches the name of your target application (see the manual instructions in the link I've previously provided)

Could OpenGL convert all frames from 16-bit to 32-bit color right before displaying? So a game could run in windowed mode without setting the desktop to 16-bit color.
