Re: Roland MT-32 digital output

in Marvin \ Sound
i think the simplest sample is the best, e.g. square wave. yes, square wave (or sinus wave), make sense to me too. I found here "Square Wave" midi file for SC-88: +1 Square waves make good harmonics in analogue circuits (audio, radio frequency). So they're good candidates for testing filters.

Re: Best Performance Config for PCem

in PC Emulation
In the past, I ran Windows 98SE on real 486 PCs and early Pentiums. Pentium 75 to Pentium 133. Pentium 166 MMX was the lowest PC I ran Windows XP SP0/SP1 on (official minimum requirement). Windows 98SE fits somewhere in-between those two extremes, I think. Windows 98SE, in its role as an "OS", …

Re: Limit DOS RAM memory (XMSDSK / HimemX / JemmEx), DOS RAM size limit

in DOS
Now that I think about it, there's merely so much you can do about badly coded software. How about a more analog solution? Is it possible to physically reduce the memory on the RAM modules? Like, using a hot air station to carefully get rid of some chips? Or, is it possible to disable some modules …

Re: Limit DOS RAM memory (XMSDSK / HimemX / JemmEx), DOS RAM size limit

in DOS
Okay, but why so militant? 🤷‍♂️ XMS has a function to report the amount of total memory. Hm. It's function 08h, I guess? "This function returns the size of the largest available extended memory block in the system." Source: http://www.phatcode.net/res/219/files/xms20.txt Now, is the largest block an …

Re: Tass Times in Tonetown - Joystick

in DOS
Hi there! The joystick problem could have several origins. Could be a speed issue, for example. Newer gameports in 16-Bit soundcards had to be speed-compensated (doing it automatically). Some high-end game cards in the 80s had a trim pot for this purpose. Issue of the problem: The PC gameport works …

Re: Which Gotek Floppy emulator for PC WITHOUT a knob?

in PC Emulation
Hi there! That version seems to use FlashFloppy, which is fine. FlashFloppy is an alternative firmware that's better than the normal Gotek firmware. It works with a large number of home computers and PCs. For an Amiga HxC might be even better, since that's what it is made for. However, HxC is a …

Re: DOS 3.3 use with larger than 32MB HDD

in DOS
Hi again! I found out about an vintage utility called "Advanced Disk Managment". It had, - among other things -, the ability to create paritions beyond 32MB. Up to 512MB, if I'm not mistaken. Very interesting. Maybe this was one of the tools that were used in the DOS 2/3 times ?

Re: 386DX40 - SB Awe64 PnP or Clone SB 1.5?

in Marvin \ Sound
If you're an audiophile or fan of trucker music, use the AWE. The EMU 8000 is supported by Impluse Tracker, so the CPU is freed from the task of mixing and up/down sampling. The 8-Bit Soundblaster and the Thunderbird are neat for testing purposes, for best AdLib/OPL2 compatibility. Don't throw the …

Re: Old cd roms

The mitsumi lu005 was also sold as the lu002. there was also an external parallel port model for which i have an old magazine ad cutout somewhere... I call them all "wafflemakers" Cool, I didn't know this! Thanks for the info! Also like the terms "wafflemakers". It's fluffy, it sounds friendly and …
