Re: Yet another 286 build.

Is there a proven fact that 287 fpu can run completelly async to cpu ? Hi again, I know it's late, but I've kept searching for some documents and found something. 🙂 "[..] Additionally, older 286 boards were often configured to run the coprocessor at only two-thirds the speed of the CPU, making use …

Re: When PC became soulless for you?

The fun part has shifted to SBCs like the Raspberry and similar, IMHO . Additionally, even modern PCs can run Linux very well. I feel the same. I'm stuck with a Pi for roughly 5 years now. As a PC alternative. I started with a Pi 3, then "upgraded" to a Pi 4. Experimenting with PiFM, PySSTV and …

Re: Connect Vt100 terminal into a dos/win311 machine

in DOS
This was in a time when simple serial terminals (glass terminals) were still around and less expensive than PCs. Back then, terminals weren't just meant as input/output devices for microcomputers (say, CP/M PCs), but also to service equipment. And to dial into distant host computers via acoustic …

Re: Windows 3.1 vs 3.11 (NOT FOR WORKGROUPS)

There was a bug in Control Panel that got fixed in 3.11, I vaguely remember. In Windows 3.10, it (sometimes ?) did ask for the wrong diskette number, if a new sound card driver or printer driver was added. So it was necessary to insert a completely different diskette to make Windows happy.

Hm. From the 2010s onwards, with the start of Windows 8 I suppose ? When UEFI Secure Boot/TPM became the norm and traditional BIOS use declined ? Since the ~2010s, PCs look all the same to me. Black/Silver, Blue LEDs.. They look like big smartphones. Bleak, soulless (no personality). Nothing new, no …

Speaking of PC games, there was at least one "real" MD computer. https://segaretro.org/EZcom Forum entry Little is known of this one, sadly. I think I've seen some YT footage (ads, reviews) at some point..

Win 95 demo for Genesis/MD

Hi everyone, Just saw something funny! 😆 Maybe of interest for those of you with a flash cart and a CRT monitor? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2hr8CgU3uM I hope the famous blue screen is included, too! That's what made Windows 9x so iconic! 😉 Have fun. Best regards, Jo22 Edit: Link fixed (ww. to …

Re: Failing SMD solder on old devices (pins of VGA chipsets etc. getting loose), how common is that?

I think the same. But perhaps it was a cheap soldering process, or the automated process wasn't mature yet. SMD mounted parts were still kind of new in the 1980s. Most parts on a PCB used conventional mounting, except computer chips with a huge number of individual pins (if they didn't use sockets). …
