Re: Hercules graphics on VGA monitors (mod)

in Milliways
Update. Did a few more tests. The other graphics card failed to display a picture @25MHz. On neither my CRT, nor my NEC LCD, I was able to see anything. Here's the CRT out of range message again.. - funnily, the frequencies are the same as provided by the Winbond card.. othe_hgc_25mhz.jpg Wow, it …

Update. Just soldered the 25MHz crystals on the Winbond card.. ...and got a success! :D It really works. H-Sync 28,3KHz, 76,4 Hz refresh rate. My Medion CRT seems to handle it without any problems so far! No glitches in text mode, so far. ^^ Edit: Quick video available at https://youtu.be/ …

Re: Advice on disk formats/drives, winimage version, etc.

You can't copy the files normally for a bootable floppy because the operating system files have to be at a certain place on the disk. The DOS "SYS" program is used to make a floppy bootable because it knows what sectors on the disk the operating system files must be, and it can move other files out …

Oh, I see. Then I recomment to try the Win16 or Win32s versions of WinImage, too. They should run on Windows 98, as well. Or try WinImage 6.x. That's what I used in the XP days, I think. If that still doesn't work, I suggest to check your floppy drive. Maybe it needs to be cleaned. Checkit! can …

Hi and good morning, Personally, I've never ever had a bluescreen with WinImage. Not even with Version 3 (16-Bit) on my 286 running Windows 3.10. Ideas. Did you try an USB floppy and a virtual machine already ? Programs like WinImage can run inside a virtual machine, too. That way, you can convert …

Re: Need a recommendation for US to Euro voltage converter

Everything I use rated for 220V AC for example, but according to my UPS, I have 236V at home. And no, nothing is blowing up in regular intervals  This may true for most equipment, but there are exceptions.. Phono equipment, for example. My father's record player was rated for 220V. When I …

Hi snorg, I sadly don't know a specific brand or model, best I can do is giving a general advice: Make sure the voltage converter says it is "computer compatible" (or compatible with switching PSUs). The newer converters often have a label on the box, if they do. If you're unsure, you can use an …

Re: XT build, need graphic/display advice

With VGA over EGA the only real issue may be the refresh rate. 200-line EGA modes are 60Hz (like CGA) but VGA will display them at 70Hz, so anything which depends on that for timing could have issues. Unlikely to be a real problem with most things, but good to keep in mind. I second that. IMHO, …

Hi, Kahenraz, thanks a lot for this thread! I'm just watching the video.. :D It's incredible how the times have changed. They sure did. Technology is affordable more than ever. And some old ideas are new again. I like how VR makes a comeback right now or how the PDAs are back (smartphones). Also, it …

Re: Unable to see more than 2GB of my HDD

I never heard of this. Is this some kind of patch? Is DOS (pre 7.1) really supports this natively? I'm amazed :exclamation: It's a patched version of DOS, yes. I was using the original version of MS-DOS 5 for this little Halloween experiment. I don't want to get too much into technical detail, but …
