Telepathy, spirituality and stuff

in Milliways
.. Response to a little discussion on the Temple OS topic. I felt that the other topic should rest in peace. So I'm replying in this one. Hope that's okay. 😅 .. But he was kind of spiritual, too. Coders are rather atheists aren't they? So they are sceptics rather than believers. LOL, no, they like …

@Caluser2000 No need for a tin foil hat. In fact, it doesn't even protect from magnetic fields, just the electric ones. :) If you don't believe in the power of magnetism, please have a look at the wonders of magnetic loop antennas. People still debate how dangerous they are (when used for transmit): …

Re: motherboard PC speakers

in Marvin \ Sound
Well, let's never underestimate the power of magnetic fields. They aren't as good understood yet as pure electric ones. However, what I'm more concerned of than a speaker's permanent magnet are chassis fans. Fans generate both types and they move. So they could cause RFI noise inside the case and …

Re: Which Linux distro(s) should I choose?

What distro will be good on a 486, that is still available? I don't need a list of what to use on everything in between, just a few suggestion of distros that will help introduce me to Linux on those two generations of system. SuSe 5.x-7.x, maybe? That's what I had on a 586 PC roughly 20 years ago. …

Re: My never ending Tandon 286 project

Just love 80286 systems! ❤️ This one seems to be in a fine condition, too! If the system is up and running, please consider installing 2MB, at least. Or 4MB, if possible. This makes GUIs running much smoother. :) Edit: Never mind, just noticed that's already the case. Maybe adding an UMB or EMS card …

The Mega CD version of Snatcher is better than the MSX/PC-88 version (because has FMVs) ? On the other hand, the PC versions, -esp. PC-98-, usually have some -uhm- special graphics the Mega CD hasn't? https://www.mobygames.com/game/snatcher/screenshots On the other hand.. The Sega Saturn version …

Re: Is there a dosbox version for 486?

in PC Emulation
Thank you very much for the information, DosFreak! 😎 - I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, 64MB minimum are a bit hefty for the average 486 PC, not to say for a Win 3.x/Win32s application. 😔 Personally, I think, the last time that I compiled DOSBox on Windows PC was when it was still using CVS. …

Re: Is there a dosbox version for 486?

in PC Emulation
Hi again. Here's something interesting, that may fit here. QB8086, a PC/XT emulator written in QuickBasic 4.5, boots on a 286 PC/AT @12MHz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFGcL26ECGY Yes, it's very slow, but it works. Remember, it was written in QuickBasic (!). A 486DX2-66 or an OverDrive CPU might …

Re: Is there a dosbox version for 486?

in PC Emulation
Well, yes, but the OP wanted save states, among other things. I thought a special Win32s version of DOSBox, with compiler flags set for i486 could also run on HX Extender.. Anyhow, it was just an idea. Older versions of DOSBox also ran on Win95 (Win32c), so SDL 1.x should be very humble when it …

Re: Is there a dosbox version for 486?

in PC Emulation
I think the same, except.. It would be a nice proo-of-concept experiment to port DOSBox to Windows 3.1, DesqView/X or PC/GEOS. And in the process, a few things would have to be simplified, anyway. For example, Windows 3.x programs can normally allocate ~16MB, at max, if memory serves (not checked as …

Re: I remember hercules being sharper, is this me?

in DOSBox General
I agree with you that DOSBox's Hercules emulation is, um, rather "raw" and not close to the output of a TTL monitor. However, that's the case with all known PC emulators. A usual TTL CRT had a green, amber or white phosphor screen. Depending on the colour, different phosphors were used, each with a …

Mega Man: The Wily Wars on Genesis/Mega Drive (vs the NES releases) Turrican II on PC (vs Turrican II Amiga) Monkey Island on FM Towns/Mac (vs Monkey Island PC/Amiga)? Lemmings on SNES (vs Lemmings for PC)? .. Not sure at this point a "port" is considered a remake, though. 🙁

It's also possible to format the HDD without copying system files. FORMAT /B will format the drive, but only preserves a free location for the system files. That way, they can be transferred later on.

I bought 30cm long cables, I think i need to get longer but anyway, making some progress on the 3.5 inch panel front You can use ferrite toroids in case you encounter noise issues. They often occur if cables get too long. Winding a noise cable around a toroid can greatly reduce coat waves, for …
