Re: What hardware do you think belongs in a museum?

in Milliways
Rolling 25 year old cutoff would work I'd think. I second that, because some platforms aged differently fast, so to say. Also, some platforms or computers had a different significance in history. Let's just think of the original XBOX, the iPod or the original Kindle ebook device. They have their …

Re: defragging ssd

in Milliways
Hm, yes. I guess we could say that the SSD doesn't need defragmentation, but Windows dos. All those "fragments" will cause the NTFS filesystem to become more and more convoluted/messed-up as time wents on.

Re: 32-Bit is dead

Look, let's stop being so inefficient, and just call it "4 byte", ok??? By going to 2 syllables we've doubled the IPC right there. Agreed. Could also be called an "quad octet" (since"byte" isn't always 8-bits), "8 nibbles" or "octa nibble" - to those who love nibbles. :) PS: I think this …

Re: Most beautiful Dos-Games for a 486...what are your favorites?

And I disagree with the assertion more "modern" tends to equate more "realistic". Some modern games look anything but realistic, while older ones do. If anything some modern games have such stunning graphics they manage to pass off the fantastical more convincingly, leaving older games looking …

Re: Windows 11 on Raspberry Pi 4

Interesting while I suppose the increased Rpi4 microSD card performances should be enough for any o.s. considering they ran their Debian verion of linux with much slower bandwidth on any microSD before this version; the idea of the USB3 to external SSD might be faster but not that compact. I don't …

Or you simply want to Print some Pages and finish your working day. But Windows 10 responds with Bluescreen because Microsoft trashed the Print Function ;-) Matrix printers, it trashed support for matrix printers (needle printers). Imagine, doctor's offices worldwide couldn't do their jobs because …

Me. It's me, I'm the revival. LOL! You made my day! :D   In any case, there are technical reasons for vinyl over other music formats. With a good system you can get very good quality sound reproduction out of it. Even better if you get your hands on a tape dub of the original master …

Oh boy, what a rant. The thing is, Linux has many thousands watching the code Ha, that old urban legend again. +1 Not Linux per se, but.. One of the BSDs had a backdoor for years and nobody noticed, despite the source code being "open". https://www.theregister.com/2010/12/15/openbsd_backdoor_claim/ …

^Vinyl, Audio CDs, MP3.. You're very nostalgic people, I see. What's the next big revival, if I may ask, Schellack records, steam engines or AM radio ? ;) Speaking of ancient stuff, there's SAQ in Grimeton, Sweden. It's the world's last functioning machine transmitter and a world heritage. For those …

Re: 32-Bit is dead

Well, and by that logic, 32 bit isn't dead because your switches, routers, other network equipment etc. has a lot of 32 bit processors doing those jobs Legacy hardware and embedded sector -> see microcontrollers exception 🙂 PS: IPv4, mTCP, 10Base2, WEP128, WfW 3.11 etc are all equally "not dead"/ …

So it is exactly like BIOS used to be as well. Buggy and exploitable. No, not really, I think. By comparison, the BIOS is as simple as DOS. It merely tests the hardware and provides a few interrupt calls, that's all. Todays software developers have the misconception that complexity makes things …
