If you have no need for flash media, there's also SCSI left as an alternative. Maybe you're lucky and you find an 8bit controller.

I need to clear up how I am entering the BIOS. It is through an setup disk, much like old IBM's. I think they are called IBM referance disk or something. I agree with both of you. But I guess it's also a good idea to wipe the disk completely, before doing anything with it.

Yup, I think he's right. It's probably something with the BIOS. But I wonder what it is. You said, this machine came with a MFM fixed disk, right ? So did this MFM controller have it's own BIOS ? I mean, did you have to run the debug program from DOS if you wanted to change the settings for the MFM …

@hal That's quite possible, as it seems the Unisys 286 is running an early version of Phoenix BIOS. I wonder, perhaps it also has some kind of MBR write-protection feature, just like AMI ? Hi! That's a strange issue you're discussing. My 286 boxes don't behave like that (one has a 4GB CF card). Is there any garbage data left on the drives which could confuse the BIOS ?

Sorry for the late response. I'm quite busy this week.. If you would send me a little test program, I could setup a PC with a real ET3000 in the next days (maybe weekend ?). It's been a while since i toyed around with VGA stuff (no idea if a simple port write to $3CD is sufficienct).

Can you confirm this on your card? You should be able to address memory linearly by setting bits 6-7 of port 0x3CD to 10(2) on the ET3000. Sure. But it will take some time, because I haven't done that before. So it's not that easy for me. Was only using the QB/Turbo Pascal and VGA BIOS so far.. : …
