Re: My childhood Peacock 8MHz XT

Um, I dont't know for sure, but some 16Bit controllers from the WD100X family don't come with a BIOS built-in. I think they rely on the systems BIOS to provide drive geometry. But you are using a normal 8bit card, so it should be possible to access the controller's BIOS. Did you try this ? DEBUG ( …

Re: 808x and prefetch

in PC Emulation
Didn't know later PCs frome the PC/AT or PS/2 line were that problematic regarding compatiblity. I thought it was the reverse. I read that in early to mid 80s some PC clones were advertised as "MS-DOS compatible", but not "PC compatible". I know of a few such models, at least on paper.. Olivetti M24 …

Re: 808x and prefetch

This is cool, but.. I wonder, why does nobody aim for cycle exact emulation of a NEC V20 ? I thought a lot of XTs where equipped with that one because the 8088 was somewhat slow it made people cry. ;) Anyway, I don't know much about this. I'm just curious, did games or applications of the 80s ever …

Re: My childhood Peacock 8MHz XT

EDIT #2: I think I figured it all out. The cards pictured were ALL part of the original setup. The MFM controller that's in the 286 is a 16-bit card so it couldn't have been used in the XT. There's also a dual serial card I probably used during my BBS days because of its 16450 UART. Does anyone …

Re: Uses for Each Windows

Windows 98FE = Okay, last one of the 9x line to officially support WinG for games. What happens when you try to run a WinG game in 98SE? Is it just a matter of copying the appropriate DLLs? In theory, yes it works. When I installed the WinG SDK on 98SE, the colour palette was different in certain …

Re: My childhood Peacock 8MHz XT

Funny you mention that... Oh, wow! Haven't seen that before, seriously. Anyway, nice pix! ^^ That seems like a nice system, I also want to see some pictues. Adding a VGA card (or a CGA/EGA card if you have a suitable monitor) is probably not a bad idea even if amber monochrome screens are really …

Re: My childhood Peacock 8MHz XT

Awesome and an interesting story! Pictures, please! :-D Only had an 8088 laptop so far, but my dad once had an PC1512 which I think had an NEC V30. He was usin' it for all kind of business stuff (you know, such as dBase, Clipper, Turbo Pascal). When I asked him about those old computers, he often …
