I've used one such adapter for a while. It worked with a SATA 250GB single platter drive, but after I replaced it with a 100GB laptop drive the system ran much faster.

Yup, definitely stories about very durable computers! Nowdays computers produce a whole lot more heat and are thus more susceptible to overheating.

If you pulled it while the system was powered on, chances are the unit is now dead. Rule #1 in working with computers is: Don't add/remove hardware while the system is powered on...ever! (Unless you know what you are doing)
