Re: My first (crappy) PC

robertmo wrote: Amigaz does this mean you never played DOS games?? Anyway can you check your Sound Blaster 1.0 DSP version on it? So robertmo, whats the deal with this anyway? It seems to keep coming back and I have no idea what this is about (I'm still kinda new to these forums mind you 😜 )

Re: My first (crappy) PC

..... I found the AGP 2X mode in the BIOS...and it's set to 2X The quick specs are wrong...please d/l and read the mobo manual :) I can confirm that it won't take 2x 512mb RAM and different utils such as cpu-z report that the AGP port is runing at 1X But that might not mean the slot itself is …

Re: My first (crappy) PC

Like I said the VIA AGP driver will sometimes change AGP settings regardless of the BIOS settings. He should check out what AGP driver is running on there. I've seen this firsthand with VIA MVP3, a chipset of similar AGP2x vintage and horribleness. And I don't like any of VIA's chipsets. Keep em …

Re: My first (crappy) PC

The AGP driver will reprogram the chipset and bypass BIOS settings. I've seen the VIA 4-in-1 pack's AGP driver shut AGP down to 1x mode without sideband regardless of BIOS settings. It still doesn't make these AGP 2x VIA boards stable with some cards. lol. I think some of these AGP 2x mobos have …

Re: My first (crappy) PC

Some graphics cards will put themselves into 1x mode if the AGP slot has issues. VIA chipsets usually have such issues. Could be crappy board quality or BIOS problems too. Maybe I should try a different GF2? http://thumbnails11.imagebam.com/8637/a4d00886365072.jpg http://thumbnails29.imagebam.com/ …

Some graphics cards will put themselves into 1x mode if the AGP slot has issues. VIA chipsets usually have such issues. Could be crappy board quality or BIOS problems too. That VIA chipset is one of the earlier ones for slot1. I did find with such a chipset, it's performance is SuperPi was about 10 …

Check the BIOS, might be something in it …

Re: My first (crappy) PC

Everything runs better in XP/2k as long as you have enough RAM and it's PII or better. :) Amigaz, how did you get the specs wrong after you linked us the specs page! There is no such thing as a AGP 1x-only slot. The quick specs are wrong...please d/l and read the mobo manual :) I can confirm that …

Re: current K6-III+ rig.

Yup, a common problem with AGP boards of that era. My GA-5AX has a voodoo2 combined with a TNT2 Vanta 16mb AGP which consumes very little power. At first I thought the Vanta was just 'filler', a card I'd put in a system if I just needed something to fill the AGP slot with but I've kinda grown to …

Re: current K6-III+ rig.

I think some boards overclock better. I had a FIC VA-503+ and two different K6-3+ chips that would do 550 max. Then I got a ASUS P5A and I manage 616 out of one of those chips (other got killed long ago hehe). You're probably right. My P5A is an older rev. 1.04, so maybe the onboard components are …

Re: Voodoo Rush

The Verite cards do full triangle setup in hardware. :D It doesn't help that much though. 486 CPUs and their platforms are too slow for 3D engines like Quake's. Thats why I chose a Verite card for my first 486 build along with good windows performance. It kinda sucks at all other things however. I …

Then I got a ASUS P5A and I manage 616 out of one of those chips (other got killed long ago hehe). I got 5 of those chips now so I'll bet atleast one of those should be able to make it to …
