Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Stick with Motion JPEG 100%. That setting never let me down. Wow, that uses a MASSIVE amount of HD space... x_x; I did a ton of testing this morning and have concluded that the present version of Bandicam is unsuitable for directly importing captured footage into my editing software, but …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

What issues if you don't mind sharing? I recently updated Bandicam and noticed it could now capture directly to an H.264 codec. I tested this and saw no issues playing back the video data in Media Player Classic and VirtualDub so figured I was good to go. However, it turns out my editing software, …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

The regularly scheduled ADG filler video is going to be a day late... D: I've run into a number of technical issues with the footage I've captured and while I can work around these issues with some of it, the rest I need to recapture over again with different codec settings. This wouldn't be so bad …

Re: What would be a nice, cheap joystick for DOS games?

in Milliways
One important question to ask is: Real DOS or DOSBox? If you're using DOSBox, any modern joystick or gamepad will suffice. I have a Thrustmaster HOTAS T.Flight X which is sort of an entry level joystick+throttle combo that only cost me around $50. Despite being inexpensive it's very solid and …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Nice to see the Street Rod video. One of these i'm going to get SR3 going again once we figure how to work with Unity 3D. But, that wouldn't be a DOS game though. Oh, btw i think the new paper changes each time you start a new game if not then i think it's fixed in SR2. I may be thinking of …

ElectricMonk wrote: Face it, the Sierra of old is gone, and is never coming back. That doesn't mean we can't get good adventure titles from a new Sierra. :B With Activision at the helm though... neh... I give it a 50/50 shot that what they come up with at first will be decent.

Re: Does DOSBox also help accomodate DOS Apps?

in Milliways
The only way to know if a particular DOS application will work with DOSBox is to just use it and see where you end up. I actually do indeed use programs like QBASIC, Deluxe Paint 2E, and Impulse Tracker without issues in DOSBox for sake of productivity, but that's not to say problems CAN'T happen, …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

If there was a way to watch adg on something like VLC or some other media player, that would work better for me than having to resort to installing flash for no good reason. Well, I'll be caught up on YouTube eventually, especially now that uploads have resumed there and I have every video file …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Hunh... The last time I had major issues with Flash was using it in Windows 98 after Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 98... *shrugs* Anywhoo, Ancient DOS Games Episode 145 - Street Rod is online! So... if my voice seems different in this episode compared to others... you're not the only ones who …

Re: Most recent DOS game releases, ever?

Harekiet wrote: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=62781 I'd guess that's the most recent one :) This website triggered Microsoft SmartScreen to have a heart attack... first time I'd ever seen that happen too after over a year of Windows 8 usage. :P

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Yeah Allegro doesn't seem that bad. Maybe we should have an allegro backend as well if someone ever makes a DOSBox rewrite! Maybe... though I think you guys have done such an awesome job with DOSBox that a rewrite probably isn't even remotely warranted. ;) Besides, considering DOSBox is an emulator …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Yeah I'd guess allegro doesn't provide the most efficient interface for drawing stuff. Although the 5.xapi seems to have some hold bitmap call that seems to delay rendering till it's constructed a large chunk of operations to fire off at once to d3d/opengl. Well, don't get me wrong, Allegro is …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Don't think you'd get that much any speed benefit compared to caching the background bitmap and only drawing the changes. Still would be a nice exercise, stick the tile indices in a 2d texture, use those indices to sample the tile textures. Only benefit would probably be if you wanted more …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Can't stick all tiles in 1 large texture and have the shader do the tile rendering 1 pass with a screen filling quad? *thinks about it for a moment* ...while that would indeed work I don't think there'd be a huge enough speed benefit compared to what I'm already doing to warrant the huge amount of …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Actually, another funny thing is that even now, scrolling methods are still useful with modern 2D gaming. The game I'm working on right now uses tilemaps but with very small tile sizes, thus even with hardware acceleration, drawing 10,000+ tiles per frame of gameplay isn't very efficient and can …

Re: Making a Batteries-Only Device Use an AC Adaptor

in Milliways
Keep in mind though, that the circuit might not be designed for AC adapter use. Batteries have a very steady voltage, slowly dropping over time. Voltage from an adapter may be more fluctuating or just downright noisy. That's actually something I didn't consider... Maybe I should first see just how …

Re: Ancient DOS Games Webshow

Well there's smooth scrolling ega platformers like keen and monster bash and vga jazz jackrabbit. They figured out how to redraw the screen with minimal effort through smart hardware scrolling instead of redrawing the entire screen each frame. Which ironically is exactly how those old consoles did …

Re: What is the main use of old, virtual Windows systems?

in Milliways
Consumer level? I would agree that VM stuff is fairly limited in usefulness. Commercial level however... well, consider that major businesses tend to use their own custom-built software, and sometimes that software will run into glitches trying to be run on more modern operating systems, so virtual …
