Re: Development on a 286, for a 286

indeed there are less options on 286. as already mentioned, djgpp and openwatcom won't work, older version of watcom shall work though. i think the options are: borland c++ 3.1 microsoft c++ 7 zortech c++/symantec c++(seems pretty rare, i have yet to find) older version of watcom(not sure which …

Re: 64bit replacement of ntvdm

in DOS
Just because it is an emulator doesn't mean it is meant to be slow. What is the newest version you have tried? If you haven't used 0.74-2 or a newer SVN build yet, you might be pleasantly surprised. i tried 0.74-2 and its still equally slow, its usually between 5~30 times slower than ntvdm …

64bit replacement of ntvdm

in DOS
there is dosbox, but i never liked it much, its an emulator which is meant to be slow, and the speed is inconsistent aswell. what i want is some equivalent of ntvdm that can run most real mode or protected mode dos programs in 64bit windows at full speed, despite lacking of sound support.

Re: speed factor of dosbox

There are also hacked versions of the IBM BASIC interpreter where the ROM code is integrated. i think thats what i am running. One should use settings of core=dynamic cycles=max to run programs at a fast speed in DOSBox, but even then it can't possibly match native execution speed because DOSBox …

Re: speed factor of dosbox

darry wrote: Forgive my ignorance, but how did you manage to run IBM ROM BASIC in DOSBox ? someone dumped the rom and connected it to the ibm basic.com header, modified the program entrance i think. i can't remember where i downloaded it though.

speed factor of dosbox

i wrote a little stupid program in basic and i wanted to test the speed difference between gwbasic and ibm rom basic, as well as that of dosbox. and the measured running time is: gwbasic: ~1.3 seconds in dos, and 53 seconds in dosbox. ibm rom basic: 4 seconds in dos, and 60 seconds in dosbox. this …

Re: best windows 98 agp card

I went and watched Phils G400max review and you can see when he opens powerstrip (at about 4:46 in the video) his card is clocked at 145MHz, so clearly there is some variance. My card is 150/200 MHz and most examples I was able to find online were clocked the same. i had tested several g400max …

Re: best windows 98 agp card

Here is a comparison video that I have made on my Tualatin 1400 testbench system. G400 Max, TNT2 Ultra and Voodoo3 3500. The G400 Max is very strong in 32 bit, loses significantly less performance than a TNT 2 Ultra in 32 Bit colour. You can see this in the last test, Incoming Subversion. All other …

need info on m$ quickbasic

qb2.0 and later versions can be easily found on the web, but v1.0 is nowhere to be found. the only place i could find is a site selling some original boxed retail floppy disks for $500 usd, which seems a bit insane for me. i heard that qb1.0 was released about the same time as the ms bascom v6.0( …

Re: best windows 98 agp card

the g400max is a fast card but my vote goes to tnt2ultra. even though the g400max can be faster in some tests, the tnt2ultra is a better allrounder with more mature drivers, and won't perform badly in some tests that its driver forgot to support.

Re: My 3DMark01 Mega Thread

What is the earliest Geforce card that can go through all the tests in 3dMark01? My Geforce 2 MX skips at least the nature test so I am also interested in what exactly is missing from earlier geforce cards that makes it skip it. nature requires dx8 support, and gf3 is the earliest nvidia card to …
