Indeed, thanks for pointing this out. I looked at a datasheet for a motherboard with only 2 memory slots (Asrock). The Asus has 4 slots and can take up to 4GB.

I wouldn't "max out" anything because it is usually very costly. I'd go with a basic DX2 66 and any Pentium MMX. If the Pentium doesn't cut it I would go straight to a PII or PIII.

Hmm I like VIA. Of course I would always prefer an Intel chipset, but had a good run with VIA stuff. My Super Socket 7 has a VIA chipset and is running DOS and Windows 95 with Voodoo without any issue. My Tualatin boards is also VIA with an ISA slot. Also no issues.

The 865 chipset only seems to support 2 GB of RAM. Clearly that was sufficient for the games from that era. I will definitely use XP SP1 max, the other ones are starting to need too much memory.

You resize the browser? Make sure you use the Windows Help and Support feature and read up on Windows Snap 😀 It will save you a ton of time.

Buy a few PCI cards and find out. Not sure why you mention demos, I would think many are programmed very close to hardware and might cause issues on PCI cards. Also many run well on a 386 but cause problems on faster PCs.

No idea about demos, but late DOS games are highly compatible with PCI cards under DOS. They likely had access to more compatible drivers compared to the old days of Sierra and Lucasarts games 😀
