IMO you're better off building a Socket 7 machine. For 3D the 5x86 just doesn't cut it and finding decent motherboards isn't easy. Unless you're dead set and won't change your mind 😁 Why a GUS? GUS suits a 386 more than anything.

I might just have to accept it and move on 😀 Very happy with the M396F to be honest. It's pretty much ideal for the old games like Wing Commander, Test Drive 3 and all adventure games from that period.

Thats exactly what I wrote... 61 disabled 115 enabled higher times are slower. I see that but it doesn't make sense. Why would memory bandwidth double without cache, yet performance nose dives. But it's the other way round. Here accessing the main memory with cache disabled is faster. Unless I'm not reading the data correctly.

That would make sense. A chipset optimised for cacheless operation vs one optimised for cache. I can't test speedsys on the M396F because I only have 1MB SIMM memory 😀 But your thinking is the best explanation so far.

Could you guys run 3dbench 1.0 on you DX-40 systems with and without cache? Tuning isn't really my thing. I prefer BIOS defaults and stable operation 😀

I'm wondering if by disabling cache, the BIOS also introduces some wait states. The BIOS must be doing something else besides just disabling the cache. That's possible, but why would it do this? In Wing Commander at the load/save screen the animation comes almost to a crawl. So is there another …

Could you display the UMC Speedsys screenshot with the CMOS memory/cache timings optimised? I have, just one post above. 16.6 in 3dbench is very high according to the VOGONS 3dbench database. There are only 2 faster systems, one being VLB. I found DOOM -timedemo demo3 very good at showing BIOS …

What performance legend :lol: Are the specific BIOS settings I should try out? I always test with BIOS defaults. The Forex achieved 16.1 in 3dbench, the UMC is faster achieving 16.6. That's with BIOS defaults on both systems. I don't have 15ns cache chips on the FOREX however and only 70ns memory. …

Ha I like the colours 😀 Reminds me of my first 386. About the cache, this system without cache is much faster than my two 386DX-40 systems with Cache disabled in the BIOS. Why would this happen? Are cache mainboards simply super slow when the cache is disabled?

YEa I have that issue on my gaming PC. I use headphones and a Sound Blaster Z with headphone surround. It's the old CMSS-3D virtual surround technology and works very well 😀

Here one of my 386 boards! AMD 386DX-40 8x1MB memory 70ns 128KB Cache Chipset is FOREX Graphics card is a Tseng ET4000 I use an ISA controller / serial / parallel 2GB CF card with 512MB FAT16 partition BIOS defaults
