IMO a Voodoo 5 is nice but needs more work usually to get some games working than a Voodoo 2/Voodoo 3. A voodoo 2 is most compatible but limited to 1024x768 res in SLI, 800x600 without. Live and audigy 1/2 both have drivers for DOS. I think you will have to track down the ones for the Audigy though but probably hosted on vogons file archive.

For Win 98SE games 1995~1997 I would say a AWE 64 Gold 1998+ SB Live I never had good luck with a Audigy 2 on win 98 and some games.

Are you using something like fraps to measure the framerate? How about temperatures on the cpu/gpu? The P4 maybe too hot and throttling? Is DMA enabled for the HDD's? Try to remove the soundcard and not use sound with the game. Does it still slow down?

I Think it's worth waiting for DX12 games I want to play to upgrade or maybe near the end of the Free upgrade time. I did jump on the win 8 $15 dollar upgrade when it came out. The only features of Win 8 I have like is better SSD compatibility and Reset feature. Otherwise I'd say stick with Win 7.

lookup microsoft ball mouse on ebay. I see enough are still around state-side. Loved mine back in the day. If you move to USB with PS/2 adapter I'd recommend the microsoft intellimouse optical. No cleaning the rollers FTW.
