Thanks, this confirms my suspicion... Yet, it is strange that these Headland based 286 motherboards are so allergic to many types of HDD controllers. I hope I will find one that do not reset the CMOS.

I think it is (one of the) cache modules or the TAG RAM. But you will want to check the RAM in another computer to make sure those are OK as well - because it is much easier to swap SIMM than DIP modules.

One more thing: official multiplier support in BIOS does not ALWAYS mean that a higher multi CPU will not work. But you cannot take it for granted . The max multiplier is what you can see in the BIOS. If it is 8x you are not going to get further. The latest bios (QS) might solve other issues. http://pross.org.uk/Abit/bios/bx6/

Is it possible that a game checks for the presence of a certain memory manager (or even worse, a particular version of that) instead of the service it provides ? If it is, than it is a possible candidate for 3rd party failures.

I was trying very hard to set up an ftp server on my Amptron clone VLB 486 board but it always gave me a warm boot. And when I set up the server on my everyday computer (Win7) and the client on the 486 the connection was not established. I might try it again with a better board and PCI LAN instead …

Of course, the only reason to put more RAM in a 486 is to have a smoother Windows "experience". The only use of Win95 in my 486 systems is the comfort for file transfers with Total Commander... :happy: Crazy as sounds, it would be nice to have DOS7 and FAT32 support on my 286 as well... :happyhappy:

Yes, gerwin, I checked that, in Xwing it is correctly labelled four operator FM. But there definitely are some games which claim OPL4 sound and they do not support that. Should look them up some time... Considering what you said, it seems the virtue of OPL4 devices is not the extended OPL capability …
