Re: Winamp playing MIDI using soundfonts

Hello, thanks for the hints, I went through the steps you described (before your post) but now have double checked this. AWE Control panel: I disabled FM synth (1st checkbox) and ticked in the second (MPU-401 emu) as well. Control Panel My AWE32 midi out port is configured to 300h, because I also …

Re: Radeon 9200 PCI and old computers

I did not want to go flaming about this issue, just said it is an overkill for testing purposes. I do not how many modern PCI cards you have tested. I had 4. All of them performed miserably in comparison with their AGP siblings and rivals. (of course, they are MUCH better then many onboard VGA chips …

Re: Radeon 9200 PCI and old computers

I thought that was the last of that line of nvidia PCI cards. Does not matter a bit anyway since, you must know, you cannot "unleash" the true potential of those chips on the PCI bus, coupled with 64 bit memory... Only a fraction of it...

Re: Radeon 9200 PCI and old computers

Even if it works, it would be an overkill for a Pentium 1, whatever your purpose is. Later PCI cards, even if they claim PCI 2.1 compatibility AND your motherboard conforms that on paper , will not even allow the PC to boot. For example, I have a GA-AX board and neither a TNT2 PCI nor the flagship …

Re: Winamp playing MIDI using soundfonts

Actually, there can be benefits of using newer versions but mostly only if you have at least a semi-modern PCI sound card and faster processor. Then you can use later effect etc. plugins without compatibilty issues. BUT here is what I have just found out: the last winamp version with its own …

Re: Winamp playing MIDI using soundfonts

Hmmm... Winamp 5.x behaves differently, maybe it is Winamp itself or its midi plugin (ver. 3.01 or above). If I select midi mapper or external MIDI in Winamp, I get no sound at all. I will try older versions then. So far I could only use DOS midi players (started from Win98 as well). Those work very …

Winamp playing MIDI using soundfonts

...a probably dump question: how does one know whether Winamp is using a soundfont loaded under Awe32 control panel (as default general midi synth) ? When GM MIDI files are playing in Winamp, I can hear no difference whatever soundfont I load... The default windows 98 midi port is AWE32 …

In need of 8 Mb Chaos soundfont

Could anyone please give a link to (or send me) the Chaos soundfont 8 mb version? I only have it in sfark format and tried 6-7 utilites to decompress it and each resulted in the same sf2, which gives annoying cracking noise with all general midi files, regardless of effects applied or not :dead: …

Re: Dos Glide Drivers.

in DOS
Thanks Iris and Davros, in the meantime I have also found a SC Rally CD. The SC 2 Voodoo 2 patch was available on an Italian site (no wonder, the largest pro 3dfx community was/is Italian). Still looking for that link to make it public. 😉

Re: Is anyone using kernelex?

I have been using Kernelex for years. Probably the most important advice I would give to a newbie is this (and it might sound sarcastic but it is not, I really like KernelEx as it allows one to run modern browsers and multimedia apps (MPC, VLC etc)) : if something that is supposed to run WITHOUT …

Re: Dos Glide Drivers.

in DOS
Please jot down a living link to that patch here, it is nowhere to be found on the internet anymore... THANKS!

Re: Problem with games changing my mixer settings

in DOS
I am having the same issues with my CT3900 in DOS. Dune2 changes the mixer the same way as well. I suppose you have a Creative sound card, too. Then try another version of Creative Basic Utilites. If my memory serves, I switched to mixerset 2.18, aweutil 1.36 etc. This -partially- solved the problem …

Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

Two cell phone cam shots at my primary time machine. Currenty with only one 60 GB HDD, planning to add a 500 GB WD and a DVD-ROM soon. The components are: Chieftech midi tower, Chieftech 300W PSU Gigabyte GA-5AX rev 5.2 motherboard AMD K6-2+ at 600 MHz 2 x 256 MB PC133 SDRAM Seagate Barracude IV 60 …

Re: Roland SC-8820 under DOS/Win98

...Finally I got round to have the SC-8820 serviced. It only had to be internally re-set to enable the muted DIN ports. I hope I can do that myself next time if necessary (It must be a dip switch, jumper or sg like that).

Re: question about MIDIOX+MIDI Yoke

It should work fine on USB power, by the book. 400 ma / 5V should be enough but it clearly is not. I tried the MIDI pass-through method (with an MT-32) as you and others suggested but unfortunately, that did not work either 🙁

Re: question about MIDIOX+MIDI Yoke

Thanks sklawz, the unit I own probably has multiple defects then. It should work on USB power under Windows, but regardless of the switch position, none of the computers I tried with detects it until I plugin in the 9V adapter as well. So it needs more juice than a standard US 2.0 hub can provide.

Re: question about MIDIOX+MIDI Yoke

Thanks for the answer. Using the USB connection method, the module plays midi files fine with Winamp or any other player. There is no MIDI sound output under pure DOS with any of these cards (they should work, according to other people on this forum): Vortex 2, SB Live, AudioPCI So only the DIN IN …
