Steve Jobs Dead at 56

It will be interesting to see what becomes of Apple now. It will also be interesting to see where the rest of the computer and consumer electronics industry goes with one less person correcting inventor's mistakes to make the product into something people would like to buy. http://en.wikipedia.org/ …

Re: k6-2 versus celeron

I wonder if one could use a 66mhz bus Coppermine Celeron with a slotket on a 440LX based motherboard. If so, then that'd be a good upgrade for one of those systems.

Re: k6-2 versus celeron

It's hard to really take benchmarks seriously. AMDs, since K6 days, have always had an upper hand in many popular benchmarks. Windows might even boot faster and open small programs quicker. However, in my experience, the increased memory throughput of the Pentium 4 vs Athlon XP makes a significant …

Re: Soundfonts in Windows 7

I have Windows 7 32bit on my desktop with a SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS. Using Creative's SoundFont bank manager, I'm able to work with sound fonts just fine. I'm using drivers from Creative's site with no modifications or patches. I suppose it might be different if I was using 64 bit OS. My attempts in …

nForce 2 has the added benefit that you don't have to go looking for a good audio card. The nForce 2 audio is probably the best chipset audio you'll find, at least from the time. If you come across one of the more elaborate boards like the DFI LanParty mobo I built my mom's computer with, you can …

As far as the socket 5 Pentiums go, if it's an overdrive, the permanently attached fan will be powered by the cpu socket and there will be various components visible between the heatsink and cpu. The boxed retail normal Pentiums won't have anything odd and the built in fan will be powered by a lead …

Re: k6-2 versus celeron

Pair an Athlon XP with an nForce 2 chipset and you'll have a pretty nice system. A Pentium 4 of same clock speed with DDR or Rambus will still outperform it though. Never the less, the performance gap between an Athlon XP with a good motherboard and chipset and a Pentium 4 isn't nearly as pronounced …

The Celeron 533 might be pushing it so I wouldn't try but I know if you had a 300A or 333, you could easily put the thing on a 100mhz bus and performance would be miles ahead of anything you could get with a K6.

Re: k6-2 versus celeron

With the Celeron, you get full speed L2 cache, faster FPU and better memory throughput. The K6 will probably outshine the Celeron in basic benchmarks and basic applications like word processing due to better integer performance among other features. That's about it. You might find plenty of DOS …

First computer I used the internet on was an IBM PS/ValuePoint with a 486SX. This was back in 1995 or 1996. In recent times, the oldest computer I used the internet with would be a circa 199 Micron Milennia with a 133mhz Pentium. That was early this year and I was even using it with what was the …

Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

I never had too big of an issue with RDRAM besides cost and those obnoxious continuity RIMMS. The 820 chipset doesn't deserve as much scorn as it's been given. That said, the i815 was great save for the artificial 512mb RAM limit. Still an improvement over the 810 and of the SDRAM PIII chipsets of …

Re: Retro Rig Photo Thread

Picked up an old Compaq Deskpro from a friend of mine the other day. 256mb pc133 sdram, 667mhz Pentium III, Intel 815 chipset, CD burner, 10gb hard drive, SoundBlaster AudioPCI, WinXP Pro and a 4mb Trident 975 video card. Originally had a cd rom drive, 6gb hard drive. The computer cleaned up pretty …
