Re: dial-up modems

in Milliways
My circa 2007 Dell Latitude as well as my circa 2012 Asus both have dial up modems. I never use them but I have a dial-up account as a just-in-case type measure. My father's 2010 Dell desktop also has a modem which he regularly uses for sending and receiving faxes.

Re: Intel to take over the world?

Following current trends, usage and the fact most users can get enough computing power from most machines on store shelves, i wouldn't be surprised if one day, motherboards are merely a set of ports leading to a central chip and some ram sockets. Each year, more and more formerly external components …

Re: Are You a Hardware Person, or a Software Person?

Hardware. It's the least stressful. You slap some crap together and it goes. Software is getting closer to being like that. If you're always busy, it's nice to just have a cheap computer, and if it breaks, the next one is just the same. Everything important is in the cloud so no worries.

Re: VLB vs PCI

My vote is for PCI from a reputable manufacturer. Most PCI boards have built in I/O sections utilizing the PCI bus for faster transfer speed. I know HP still manufactures the 12C and if I'm not mistaken, they still manufacture other model calculators that use RPN.

I don't think a calculator made after solar cells, coin cell batteries and LCDs caught on goes obsolete. I don't see many calculators from the 70s or early 80s in regular use but it seems calculators from the late 80s and up are just as common as brand new ones. There's also a few models out there …

Early LED displays I don't care for. One example is a Rockwell pocket calculator from the 1970s I own. The display is just too small and doesn't provide good viewing angle. BTW, I was reading about old TI products and found this page: http://www.datamath.org/Graphing/TI-78.htm Has anyone here heard …

^ Correct. VFD tubes. I think Nixies were a few years before this calculator's day. Also, some interesting things: the Negative symbol is a red LED and also, each button on the calculator is actually a magnet. Under each, there's a glass tube with two separated pieces of metal. When you press a …

Calculators?

I know we all like old computers but does anyone here collect old calculators? I have a ton laying around my place. My most recent acquisition was a Ti 86 and not long before that, I got an HP 12C that was made in USA in 1988 which I carry around with me now. However, most of my calculators came …
