Re: suggestions for windows XP

in Milliways
It just seems as if the athlon xp has not aged as well. The cpu lacks sse2 support (chrome refused to install back when I was using it for an internet box)..... The motherboard lacks sata connectors (effectively prohibiting the use of a new hard drive)... The choice of coolers is MUCH more limited …

Re: suggestions for windows XP

I just realized something browsing motherboards. Anything I would get would NOT have AGP so I'd be looking at getting a new video card too (or just using PCI) Hmm....new board, new cpu, new RAM...once upon a time you could recycle at least SOME components! 😀 😀

Re: what will you do when your last hardware fails?

in Milliways
The components I have the most trouble with and shortest lifespan are.........cpu coolers Yay for crappy sleeve bearings. Actually that's not the problem. These were not cheap coolers (Nexus 3200s). But I have one that doesn't always start like it's supposed to. One freezes if it sits for too long …

Re: Commodore 64 revival (warning, wall of pics)

I often thought of getting a commodore 64 off Ebay. But then I always started thinking that once the nostalgia wore off it would quickly wind up sitting in the closet. Also, I strongly suspect that getting a 1541 in good condition would be difficult...those are going to be 35+ years old at this …

suggestions for windows XP

in Milliways
Just thinking here. I have a copy of Windows XP running on an A7v400 (or was it the 600?) It sat in the closet for a long time; then for the longest time I wiped and reinstalled every 30 days rather than activate it - I didn't want to "commit" that copy of windows XP to that hardware. I would like …

Tale of two hard disks

in Milliways
A while back I got out an old P3/850 I had built but never used much. I'd always had a nagging problem I could never track down - when burning a disk, sometimes the verification step would fail. I tried everything - master/slave settings, new cables, etc. The computer had two drives - st340016a and …

last programming project

in Milliways
One of the last programming projects I was working on - granted this was many years back now. Actually had two programs - both written in pure assembly. The first read sectors off a floppy and displayed the contents. Also allowed you to edit the contents. The second program read the FAT and gave you …

Re: Long time

Y'all got a point there. It's probably been at least five years since my last build. The last was an Athlon XP running Win XP. Actually I sold out and finally just bought a computer. BUT from time to time I browse ebay and yes the prices have become insane. Used to be you could get good socket 7 or …

Re: Long time

I remember something someone once posted on here about the stages of being a retro PC collector. You get to the point where you pull something out of the closet, fire it up for a while for the nostalgia trip. Then you realize you really can't do anything with it and put it back in the closet for six …

Long time

in Milliways
It's been a long, long, long time since I was last on here. I was browsing, and found some old posts made by myself in.....(drum roll) 2011. I doubt anyone remembers me!
