Windows xp experiment

in Milliways
Well... being unhappy with the performance of my Linux internet box, I decided to try XP First, the good. I was able to install a much more modern browser - upgraded from Firefox 14 to 36 (big jump there). I was also able to install Opera (19 was as high as I could go there.) I was also able to …

Re: Where has Seagate gone?

in Milliways
I wasn't trying to turn this into *that* kind of thread - but I probably have 10-12 Seagates from the 40-gigabyte error that are still running flawlessly. However it does seem that they have gone down quality wise. Even if I could find them I would probably not buy - their warranty is not …

Where has Seagate gone?

in Milliways
Seagate external drives have pretty much disappeared from all the brick-and-mortar stores around here - Office Depot, Staples, Wal-Mart. All you can get is Western Digital and Toshiba. Is everyone else seeing the same thing? (Just curious)

Re: Commodore 64 revival (warning, wall of pics)

in Milliways
yeah.... all of the above is why I am having serious second thoughts.... the chance of getting a good 1541 is small.... unless lucky I would wind up with 2-3 of them and.... I keep thinking.... there's a *reason* why I got rid of that stuff once I got a 486 with win 3.1 and started getting on the …

Re: Commodore 64 revival (warning, wall of pics)

I am just curious here - do you still use this C64? Or has the thrill worn off and it is now sitting in a closet? I keep thinking about getting one myself. But I am afraid that will be what happens - once the thrill has worn off, I would realize what is the point in doing anything with it. At one …

Who made this board?

in Milliways
Just for the sake of curiosity, does anyone know who made this board? http://www.ebay.com/itm/MODULAR-CIRCUIT-TECHNOLOLOGY-MCT-M486V-MOTHERBOARD-128MB-32BIT-VESA-SLOTS-/371096151520?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item56670de5e0 MCT is JDR's house brand - I very seriously doubt they made it themselves. I …

Re: The end of the road?

in Milliways
I think I answered my own question... part of it at least. Seems like a Radeon 9600 with Windows 7 is questionable at best. With regards to my current Linux system...... it is not as if the OS does not support it. The OS itself seems to... the errors are with Firefox. When I got to "troubleshooting …

vinyl making a comeback?

in Milliways
OK so this is not really on topic for Vogons but I am just curious what people here think. I was just in a record store yesterday and saw a rather large collection of....... vinyl records?????? And not all of it old.... some of it looked like new releases. Apparently vinyl is making something of a …

Re: The end of the road?

Thanks for all the replies.... you guys have given me a lot to think about I think I had it right to begin with... end of the road.... for this system. I was looking at graphics cards.... I am restricted to AGP on this board.... so I think that any CPU upgrade would be marginal at best (and not long …

Re: The end of the road?

Thanks for all the feedback. I was looking at my frefox tabs and it says "gpu disabled" and "webgl disabled for driver issues". COULD be one of the reasons why it is so slow. I am using a Radoen9600 SE. I have a feeling I could get much better performance out of XP. How secure it would be is …
