Re: Compute and Infoworld

Lately I've been wanting to read some reviews and articles about old hardware. So I went looking for some magazine archives hopefully similar to PC Magazine or PC World. Compute does reviews, publishes programs in the magazine, and lots of technical articles on hardware. Top notch stuff here. 1979- …

spartan technologies

Has anyone every ordered from spartan technologies? I have been a customer for 10+ years. But they really dropped the ball. That last P3 processor I ordered was bad. They gave me a RMA and I mailed it back, but they have ignored all queries about the status of the order. Furthermore I think they …

I agree with a lot of the comments here... I have gone through purges too. At one time I decided I wasn't going to "support" anything less that win98. Now I regret throwing my old 486 box and even went so far as to resurrect DOS on another machine I agree the older stuff is getting harder to find. …

They don't force you to upgrade. When new technology comes out, software is released to support it. When programmers find new things to add, new software comes out. However, your old hardware and software can still do what they did when you got them. Also, say what you want but a business must sell …

I think that microsoft has done a very good job of making anything more than 2-3 years old LOOK like junk  The fact of the matter is that the older versions of office could already do 99% of what most people needed. I absolutely HATE the new versions of office. I still use win98. The only …

It all sort of raises interesting questions. You can keep older computers running practically forever. The question is - can you be happy using older software? Sometimes I think the older software was actually better. On the other hand - where do you draw the line? How old is too old? I have a …

Juink, Junk, Junk

in Milliways
Do any of you guys just look at your computers and say junk, junk, junk? Yes there is a certain fascination and nostalgia with running older systems. I have a whole bunch of very nice P3 machines from the 99-2000 era (Asus P3B-F, 2 CUBX boards, three Tyan Trinity 400 boards). I could probably keep …

Actually I was looking at the motherboard caps. They are Tayeh, which is apparently a bad brand. None of them appear to be bulging or leaking, but I'll bet they are just bad enough to make the board more susceptible to a borderline power supply.

Re: enlight power supplies

I was thinking about opening the supplies myself. I am not sure if they are the same model or not. I got them with some enlight cases I bought some time ago. I later upgraded the power supplies and kept those as spares. I've searched the internet and quite a few people seem to say enlight supplies …

Re: enlight power supplies

Correct - I ripped out a Silencer 370 out of another computer and no problems at all - very strange. The K6-2 board must be drawing more off one component of the supply than the P3 board - only thing I can think of.

enlight power supplies

in Milliways
Does anyone have any experience with enlight power supplies? I was playing around with resurrecting an old k6-2 board and was having nothing but problems - lockups, registry errors, the list goes on and on. I tried three different RAM sticks and no go. I eventually traced it back to the power supply …
