Re: K6-2 Blues

I have one of those Epox boards - it is good! Just my personal preference but I would be inclined to stay from Ali chipsets. Are they even around anymore? VIA is an established brand and has been around for a long time. I have used three different boards with the MVP3 chipset and all have worked …

Re: new old computer

I have a couple of Tyan 1854 boards with the Apollo Pro 133 chipset. I could never get voodoo and awe 64 to coexist - I would always wind up with choppy screens and stuttering sound. I tried everything, and I do mean everything. I didn't have the problem with BX or with MVP3.

socket 370 cpu fan

Can anyone suggest a good socket 370 CPU fan (that I can still get)? I have been looking all over and really can't find anything but cheap junk that seems like it was really designed for socket 7. I did find this one: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std/sku=axp-3200 It seems more of a socket A …

Re: K6-2 Blues

I would agree with the earlier comments about k6-2. I have run K6-2 and P3 systems of the same speed. If all you're going to do is run office, you might not notice the difference between the two. But on something like video editing or rendering with POV-Ray, the K6-2 would take twice as long as a P3 …

new old computer

I have been working in a new old computer. 1. Asus p3b-f with p3/450 katmai processor I got off ebay ridiculously cheap 2. Ensoniq voodoo banshee video card that I salvaged from a computer on a garbage pile :) 3. Sound Blaster AWE64 4. Seagate 80-gigabyte drive 5. DVD-R and DVD-Rom drives (new, lite …

Re: DUD Hardware

I never used zip drives. I jumped on the CD-R drive early on and never looked back As for floppies being unreliable - well I would agree that they are. But back when they were all you had I never remember THAT many problems with them - and I used to have a drawer full! I'm almost wondering if the …

Re: DUD Hardware

in Milliways
The tape drives I had would take all night to write and verify a full tape - ridiculous! Those eventually got thrown out. I got a HP CD writer when the first came out - I paid $350 and that was on sale. Back then being able to burn a CD was a really big deal. That thing lasted forever - burning …

DUD Hardware

in Milliways
A lot of people (including myself) look back at retro computing with rose-colored glasses. Has anyone every had any DUD hardware? Something you never really used or didn't work well? At one time I had a couple of tape backup drives - the ones that ran off the floppy connector. They were better than …

Re: memorable CPUs

As I look back the computers I have had are: A 486 DX4/100 that I used for a long time A pentium MMX 166 A pentium MMX 233 that was never used that much A P3/500 that has been around in various incarnations FOREVER (I sill have it) A couple of k6-2/500s that I keep around for voodoo/glide games A p3 …
