Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

MobyGamer wrote: FYI, I finally managed to get in contact with someone who worked at IBM during the design phase of the PC (...) Anyway, thought people would like to know. Jim, as always, you rule! 😀 Now of course there's the next question: why did this terminals have brown instead of dark yellow …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Hey Trixter, glad you finally found this forum. I sent you an e-mail a while ago to invite you to the discussion, but I'm not sure it went to the right address (your internet presence this decade seems almost non-existent). Whoa, hold on -- people didn't do that because EGA pinout isn't compatible …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Also, I believe I have finally found an answer to the question of which color does the IBM 5153 Monitor show for color 6. My source finally came through with captures of the 5153 with a digital camera, and here is what he shot: ... This is the same screenshot modified to boot the green value from …

Re: MCGA already supported in dosbox

It looks MCGA is compatible with VGA so dosbox also supports MCGA. However I did not find any informamtion dosbox supports MCGA. Maybe it could be good to add such informaton to supported harware list? DOSbox emulates the MCGA emulation of the VGA. So strictly speaking, it's just a side-effect. JAL

Re: Ctrl+F5 in dos program

in DOSBox General
It worked!!! Thanks alot.. LOL you won't believe how many PNG files i've mistakley created while trying to figure this one out :) PNG files are small. Try for a change Ctrl-F6 (captures sound) without knowing what it does. I thus created a 2Gb WAV-file, filling up the remainder of my free disk …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Yes, there is evidence. Back in the late 80's/early 90's, before I had enough money to buy an EGA monitor, I obtained an EGA card and connected it almost without problems using my CGA monitor. The only catch was that 640x350x16 did not display on the monitor. The monitor would completely lose sync …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

The PC and XT have DIP switches, but there is a set of two (for four possibilities) to select the video adapter. One setting selects an MDA Text Mode, another selects a 40 Column CGA Text Mode, a third selects an 80 Column CGA Text Mode and a fourth lets a video card with an onboard BIOS select the …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

If you recall, the IBM PC and XT has a jumper block to set the video display device. It has four settings, MDA, 40-Column CGA, 80-Column CGA and EGA/VGA (adapters w/on-board BIOS.) This is becoming a tedious discussion, as you do not seem to have your facts straight. First of all, show me the 'CGA …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Did it occur to anyone that G could be somewhere between 0.66 and 0.33? I assume there are analog circuits involved at some point, so that might be possible (and might explain why people recall it one way or the other, subjectivity getting in the way) It very probably is between 0.66 an 0.33, at …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Well, it was too late to change the CGA specifications, but the exclusive display monitor the device was supposed to use, the 5153 Color Graphics Display, could be changed. The CGA specification had little to do with it, as, as already pointed out in this forum, the CGA sends a 4 bit digital signal …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

"of all the primary colors, the CGA can't show brown or any decent substitute for it." Just to nitpick: brown is no primary color (only red, blue and yellow are), it is not even a secondary color (purple, green, orange), but a tertiary color. At least that's what I remember from my (long gone) …

Re: Long file names

Just don't use long filenames for directories that will be used by DOSBox. Don't do it. DOS didn't support long filenames, so even if DOSBox does it will still not work in a lot of games. I don't entirely agree. Since the DOSbox commandline interpreter isn't a real DOS program running on top of …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

"Dark yellow" is R=0.66 G=0.66 B=0.00; "Brown" is R=0.66 G=0.33 B=0.00; objectively. In RGBI, color 6 has bits 1 and 2 set, meaning that R and G should be equally bright, resulting in dark yellow; "brown" is not possible at all if you follow the RGBI color model strictly. If apparently all known …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

NewRisingSun wrote: Servo wrote: On all of these color 6 appears as brown. Damn... Isn't the distinction between brown and dark yellow a bit subjective? I always considered color 6 to be dark yellow on the CGA, and brown on the EGA (it was darker on EGA than on my clone CGA). JAL

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Incidentally, running the game without the switch will cause a crush sooner or later I wasn't aware of such power. Well, it says so on spacequest.net and I also witnessed it myself - if I started the game without the -N switch, sooner or later it asked for a missing 992.V56 or 993.V56 file. It's …
